Step one by itself works if you don't have much space I think. More is good for smoother though

Nice guide here for the most common dithering pattern. Another quick note for beginners is not to overuse dithering! Often on small sprites it's not needed at all. Best use for dithering is when you have a lot of colors and want a smooth gradient, or you can put the dithering to double use as a texture (like rough sand) and gradient.
