Description Turn up your speakers, this one talks!

This was my animation final! I'm pretty excited about it because I really felt like I hit a learning curve in my work- FINALLY. It's no secret that I struggle tremendously with animation, but I think there's some hope for me yet, at least.

This was my first time going back to FBF animation in flash after a while of working paper-pencil, and I'm really happy with how well the process went. I'm even happier that working in flash worked out because that means I can practice outside of school now, on my own.

sound clip is from Madagascar and the characters are (based off of) the birds/owls from Sleeping Beauty

Hey, thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment! That's certainly a rare, but welcome, thing. As for plastic pencil, I cannot download it for free as I have a mac (at the least the only file I can find for it is a .exe?).

Flash itself is not the best for drawing in, admittedly, which makes it difficult to do frame-by-frame, but you can get used to it.

Also thanks for the comment on my sketch there. Yes, it's been suggested that it looks like a still from an animation, if I have time I might experiment. Thanks for being so thorough and caring about my work!

Awww, yeah, PaP4 is Windows only. There is an open-source program, Pencil, which is cross-platform, but it might not compare well to Flash. The main thing I dislike about it is the line quality. Drawing is fine and easy, but when you zoom in, you can see that the lines are a bit jagged or blurry looking. This is really only a problem if you're looking to make a finished product within the program though.

The way I've used it before is, do the animation in Pencil, export the frames, "ink" and color them in GIMP, and then make a video out of them in Blender (which has a video sequence editor). You could probably just use Flash for all those finishing steps, which might be a bit less inconvenient. XD

And commenting is my pleasure! I always have lots to say about this stuff, so it's great to have someone that talks back.

Also, thanks muchly for the watch!

Well I appreciate the program ideas there! Personally, I've become comfortable in Flash (though again, it really does suck for drawing but you just have to be careful/get used to it), and I do know photoshop has been used for animation as well which I want to experiment with.

With Flash, the main appeal is you can animate rough, clean it up, color it, add a background & some effects all in the same program, AND it's just so easy to use and user friendly. And because it's an Adobe program, it crosses over well with photoshop, illustrator, after effects, etc.

If you're interested in what I mean, I'm currently working on this project with my friend as an animator and color designer- [link] and we animate, clean up, ink, and color in flash and add effects in adobe after effects : )

Yeah, it's great to talk to someone interested in this and very knowledgeable !

Yep, integration of all the Adobe programs is why I totally wish I had all of them (or any of them, for that matter). I would do animation, clean-up, and coloring totally within Photoshop, and just take that into Adobe for compositing. Actually, I guess I could even do background paintings in Photoshop, so all I'd need is PS for EVERYTHING and AE for putting it all together. But I don't have either of them, so I'm stuck with whatever free software I can scrounge up.

By the way, that project is looking totally awesome.

Well, personally, I commend you for being extremely resourceful with what you have. A lot of people hide behind the notion they don't have the right programs or whatever, but you've found a way to make it work because you are really passionate! : ) Do you have any of your animation work around?

blendroid In reply to Saetje [2010-10-29 04:44:12 +0000 UTC]

I do have a few, but the two on my Doink page are probably the best to date, despite being pretty basic and almost a year old. [link] [link]

My friend and I are working on a pilot for an "anime" which will hopefully have some pretty detailed and TV-quality (American TV-quality) work, but for right now, I'm working on telling the story in "manga" form to get used to drawing the characters and whatnot, which is what you see the beginning of on my page. Of course, now I'm stuck on the layout of page 2. It's amazing how framing a shot for animation can be so totally different from telling that same story with panels on a page!

Oh man, about your work on Doink- NICE! I especially like the first one, you really used the media you had to the advantage to create a nice, pleasing style for animation. The layouts on that one are fabulous, by the way.

I noticed that even in your gallery your space layout was also very, very nice. The ability to make nice backgrounds is a great skill to have that not a lot of animators (including myself) have. I'm impressed!

As for the pilot, that's awesome! I wish you guys the best of luck with that, it's so exciting to meet another original creator.

Beautifully animated! I studied traditional frame-to-frame animation for a while and it's extremely difficult, especially when you're considering animation and the weight of the object. This is very well done!

You're very welcome. You did an amazing job. I know how hard it is as well since I spent a few years obsessed with Disney's old cartoons and learning how to do it- and I can say I was no where as good as you are!

The owl came out exceptionally well, but what really grabs me is those poor little traumatized birds. I love the looks on their faces in the second shot, and how they jump back when the owl says "Good!" Very nicely animated, and definitely something you should be proud of!
