In Pripyat, yellow-eyed dogs claim self-ownership on evolutionary grounds.

Where the needles of twisted pine-children point not to the sky but some place below, the forest is waiting for wolves and wild horses, intending to swallow them whole. It will then stagger out of itself, an infant chimera already gravid with eggs.
