Description
HEY YOU: Don't favourite this. There's a new version here .Alright, so, besides continuing to grow, the icon set also does get its butt ported back and forth between platforms a lot. To that end, I present an updated Leopard port. This does not contain the bundles or any other graphical resources that were present in the old Leopard release ([link] ) but it does contain (very nearly, I think) all of the icons.
And moreβin addition to the 712 icons in the Windows version, and the two more icons in the Tiger version, sixteen further icons have crept in, mostly for Adobe Illustrator, but a couple of new folders (cartography, cartography 2, and epigraphy) and a copy of that totally sexy pocket watch that appears in these preview images (at last!)
This may work on Tiger. I'm not sure. I got a report that the conversion process I used to make these does produce something that works on Tiger, even though Leopard's native converter produces icons that are incompatible. Try it, though, and let me know if you get disappointed or not.
Click here to download: new version here .
(And since I've been getting so many questions about it lately, the PNG version is [link] here. No, it's not really silver.)

Just decided on this set for my new MBAir; totally in love. I just wish there were a few more applications, like the rest of the iLife and iWork sets and the calendar. I know that last one is a mess to change, but still, it'd be cool to have it.
Also, I kind of wish I had Portal on my mac now, just to use that icon. Totally made my day when I found that in the collection.

You should probably like to know that there is in fact a third edition . It probably won't help fill in those particular gaps, but it might enrich things. I'll look into those other critters for a hypothetical fourth.

I found that after I left the comment. I'm considering using the passport for the calendar, but am afraid that the date isn't going to fit on it because it's more rectangular. But I love the new trash cans; very classy.
Keep me updated please if there is a fourth edition released. This is a really gorgeous set of icons.

Can you please tell me how to apply these icons to my mac? Is there a program who can help me with it? Or do I have to do it manually?
π: 0 β©: 1
Samantha-Wright In reply to Sylien [2010-10-03 05:31:39 +0000 UTC]
There's no way to apply all of these icons automatically, no. Candybar can apply some things, but this set was built with the intention of satisfying people with the obsession of fixing every little crackβand unfortunately there's no cheap way to do that.
If you do decide to take the plunge, this older version is packaged in such a way as to make it easier to replace the images used in Leopard, but it's still a lot of manual work, and it's not built in such a way as to be easily removable.

Excellent.
I love this package.
Good job, really.

Okay, I've never changed icons on my computer before. I have the file downloaded, now how do I change out the old mac icons for the library ones?
π: 0 β©: 1
Samantha-Wright In reply to GallyKaru [2010-04-08 17:33:22 +0000 UTC]
That's a fairly good question. There are some tools to do it for you, such as Panic's CandyBar , but these are total ripoffs because the work can be performed manually.
First, read this tutorial . It will explain how to open bundles and look around in them.
Remember that most things in OS X are bundles, including programs and system components. The icons are buried throughout these. To replace icons, you simply drag and drop to replace them. That's what all these .ICNS files are for.
There is no method more efficient than this because OS X assumes that folders are immutable when overwriting them (on Windows you can drag-and-drop to merge folders).
If you want some additional graphics other than just icons, this older version has a lot of other graphics too, put into directories so you can find where they go more easily.
There are a few programs that don't conform to this internal standard (Microsoft Office being the most notable) because the programmers were lazy or they're really old OS 9 programs in disguise. Editing the resource lumps used by OS 9 programs is hard; hacking Office 2004 appears to require a rather great deal of intimacy with a hex editor.
Hopefully that settles that?

Right, so for code and program dumb people like me buy candybar, got it. >.<

Oh no, nothing like that is necessary at all. You just right-click on apps and pick 'view contents', then find the right files to replace. It's pretty simple really, just tedious.

For some reason using neither the icns or pngs are working on my computer anymore. They worked for a little bit and now when I go to drag and drop they show me nothing put an empty image icon.

can you make a basic normal finder icon by using the same gold texturing as you used on your folder icons please.
regards

Tried it: looked terrible. Working on something new and experimental for the job. Consider using "Utilities - Cheddar" or "Book - Brownish Journal" (which is actually supposed to be the Finder icon, as strange as that may sound) until then.

I know but this looks like a book I would like normal original finder icon like in os x but same gold textured as the folders. gold in middle and slightly darker at edges like (Folder - Calligraphy icon}. by the way what font is that you used here Folder - Calligraphy it is nice.
many thanks

The font is called Civitype. I will work out something that looks bearable, but quite frankly just restyling the Finder logo wouldn't fit in with the theme. You may find [link] suitable, however.

I will wait for yours, I have already seen that one but I don't like it texturing edges and slight bevelled edges just makes yours look fab.

EDIT:
When i said "adding to the collection" i did not recognize that you already have icons for those apps (the books). I was looking for more of a personalized touch, i guess, so i decided against replacing all app icons with books..

Samantha-Wright In reply to Salvatore-Dali [2009-12-07 18:47:48 +0000 UTC]
The original books-for-apps icons do seem a little strange at first, definitely, but it turns out they end up looking really wonderful when you put them all together in a row: [link] The majority of them are chromatically different enough to be told apart, so really on this matter I've gotta say: try it before deciding it's not for you.
However, I am aware of the problem; on Windows, I use the Sandwich set for application icons almost exclusively. The next British Library release also has a lot of game icons, none of which are books. There are a good number of icons already, especially in the miscellaneous category, that can serve for various programs—e.g. Miscellaneous - Burning could be used for a CD/DVD burning program like Toast, and Miscellaneous - Actions was originally actually intended for Automator (I think.)
If there are any metaphors you find yourself totally up a creek without a paddle on, though, I'll look into adding something.
...and if you really want your Mac to look vintage, shouldn't you run System 7 in an emulator?

Salvatore-Dali In reply to Samantha-Wright [2009-12-22 12:07:13 +0000 UTC]
You see, my central goal in the process of theming is to get as much text off the screen as possible. I just want pictures and colors, flowing together, forming a central vintage theme. And by vintage i don't mean old-school OS, like you thought i did. I want all the functionality, convenience, and speed of the new OS, but with a rugged old somewhat dirty look. For this purpose, your beautiful set fit like a key.
I do wish, however, that i was better at photoshop: then i could fill in the blanks from the samples you have already provided. For my video player, for example, there are a couple of document formats missing, like FLV. If i knew how to do it, i could just take the blank video document, shift the movie reel on it up a little, and add the letters myself... Do you think you can share the source images (and fonts, and whatever else) you used to combine to make the Document icons?
The further i get into theming, the more i realize that i have been eliminating as much blue off my screen as i possibly could This thing is starting to look good
I also wanted to take this time to ask you if you know of an app for Leopard to customize your cursor. I have Might Mouse Haxie 2.0b1, which comes as a demo, so the pointer changes back to default after a couple of hours. I've read up on this beta and found out that it will not activate even if you purchase the product, so there is no way to use this app other than in trial mode. That is the only way i could find to change the mouse pointer. Do you know of any other ways? Perhaps a direct intervention into some file, like the SArtFile for Finder components??

Samantha-Wright In reply to Salvatore-Dali [2009-12-22 22:42:37 +0000 UTC]
I am indeed quite aware of that interpretation of vintage—I apologise; I was poking fun at you. I generally feel that the word more belongs to the twentieth century than the nineteenth.
The fonts I generally use aren't exactly free; this is the sole reason I didn't put out a set of book and text templates ages ago. Most of the efforts I've seen to alter my work so far have been... embarrassing (such as an iPhone theme that grafted the System Preferences lightswitch onto a bookcase), and this is a certain motivator for it. I will get to it as soon as I can—and in the mean time, I heartily encourage you to submit any file types you may be missing so I can fill in the gaps! Flash video wasn't as popular a medium two years ago as it is now; at least, not in a ripped form. I will make sure there is an icon for it in time for the next release.
About blue: I know the feeling all too well. It's quite peculiar, because it used to be my favourite colour, but around my nineteenth birthday I started feeling that it was altogether rather cold, and adding more blue to things didn't really make them feel more like they belonged together. I like brown because you can bring out richness from it with, for example, Color Burn, but at the same time it's a very plain and inconspicuous hue and forces the artist to create more than a circle with a gradient on it in order to feel like the image is complete. Obviously, it could be done with blue as well, but once you've got the intricate details, you don't need to...
I don't know a thing about cursors on Leopard, sorry. I will be releasing a pack soon though, with something like fifty different variations on the theme of 'What Is An Up Arrow Supposed To Look Like?' (thanks, Linux) so if you find a program that can work, do please tell me so I can link to it! Currently, though, the only Mac I have is tangerine, so I can't exactly run Leopard on it to find or test something myself.

..i started customizing my MBP about a month ago and was quite a ways into it. Two days ago I accidentally ran into this collection and now my Macintosh looks VINTAGE! I LOVE IT!! thank you very much. If you are planning on adding to the collection please consider adding more MAC Apps, like VLC, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Toast Titanium, Automator, etc, etc..
This is EXACTLY what i have been looking for from the very beginning! THANK YOU!
