A big thank you for your help for the creation of dragons.
I plan to create a 3d with Blender and your tutorials will be of great use.
I have already created a pterodactyl for a challenge, I will post it soon.

Wait, wouldn't the body be short so the muscles have less work to do to hold the rest of the dragon's body in flight? I mean, look at birds today, short bodies an all. Also, wouldn't you think that the muscle is concentrated mostly around the chest?(driving muscles for the wings and all.) Great tutorial BTW.

But... shouldn't legs be larger, stronger, to hold dragon's body? o.o

If you believe so then you draw that c:Β

Again, thank you!

Exactly, a wing shoulder and the arm shoulder aren't made out of one piece. Good anatomy of the wings, but the back of the dragon looks very painful

BaryMiner [2016-02-24 20:44:09 +0000 UTC]
I have a comment: You say that having the wings on the arms is unnatural. But do remember that dragons would have to have grown two extra limbs to evolve wings, which is impossible

Improbable in our world, but not on others.

Yes, but I assume that the dragons intended to be described are supposed to be earth creatures.

I feel that she was just basing her dragon's anatomy of of earth creatures and their anatomy, but that doesn't mean that her dragons are in our universe.

Ehm.. I got a question. Why is drawing bones important in dragon art?..
π: 0 β©: 1
SammyTorres In reply to aZuLaHtEhPoNeH97 [2015-02-08 02:37:57 +0000 UTC]
Understanding basic anatomy is always important when you're going for a semi-realistic dragon design. You don't have to draw the bones as detailed as I did but just understand their structure.Β

Finally somebody who thjink like me!!!
FINALLY!!!
why do you all fix paws and wings on the same block??? this is stupid!
just do like me and sammy: one structure for each limb/ pair of limb!
well, I personally don't like ears on dragons, except if... we think somehow the dragons could be more credible in mammals! ^^
when I think about it: bat wings, pangolin's scales, antelope horns... not stupide to think a dragon can also be a mammal! ^^

I can agree there for the most part, but I will say that a dragon having aural openings that are covered/protected by various head-appendages (plates, spines, fins, etc) also works well in many reptilian and avian cases.

I love these tutorials and I use them along with some things from a book of drawing dragons by one of my favorite dragon artists
here is the book: www.amazon.com/Dragonart-Evoluβ¦
I do own one and I love it! notΒ only for the drawing info but the cute little comics here and there!

One minor thing with the snout.Β I totally get what you mean about the upper snout commonly being bent and looking broken, BUT birds DO have a hinge (nasofrontal hinge) where the bill meets the forehead and can bend it upward.Β Just another thing to keep in mind.Β (Though I'm with you that I don't think many people have this sort of avian-like movement in mind when they draw "broken" snouts.)
Examples:
You can see the hinge on this cormorant skull where the bill meets the forehead: www.mnh.si.edu/lewisandclark/iβ¦
Parrots, like this macaw, have very noticeable hinges: www.connecticutvalleybiologicaβ¦

Again, I totally understand what you were getting at, but might be a good idea to address that it can happen, but still has "rules" like any other anatomy.

That's just really intelligent and well done!
I'll use those advices
Aslo, I didn't thought about the different way of putting the bones so the dragon is able to fly, really helpful!

SammyTorres In reply to Nebquerna [2014-02-15 14:47:48 +0000 UTC]
There are many other ways as well However, you don't have to be all obsessed by making the dragon look super realistic, it's okay to "bend " the realism a bit to make your design work
Β
Anyway, I'm glad you think of this useful n__n
