Description
I see a ship in the harbor
I can and shall obey
But if it wasnt for your misfortunes
Id be a heavenly person today
And I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard you speak
Tell me how do I feel
Tell me now how should I feel
Now I stand here waiting
- New Order, Blue Monday

I like how you work the reflections and lights/shadows in general, reflexive textures. Full in details, I like that in an very good job! The structure is Excelent worked! It has a peacefully and relax environment. Well... Sure, If you like, you can delete that lightings "up there", I just think that they don't contrast with the entire concept... Hahaha, details, I can see the little cars running Inside and Outside the structure. And sure, the little people. Awesome job...

A lot of this was rendered in seperate files and composed (put together) in one file. This way rendering is faster.

Yeah! Really true, for me is usual to working pics in that way, is more easier, faster and you can change, replace and manipulate anything later, when you like. So, be sure to save the appropiate format for manipulate the rendering! If you choose the wrong format you can't edit your work "object by object" later. Hehehe, You know that...

In this picture, I have the following in different layers :
- foreground with water and boat
- second foreground with trees, cars.
- Base of building
- Main building
- 3 sky maps
All are rendered at the same angle. Very important to lock the camera & sun position.

Very nice, i just have a question: Is it two towers with a base? or is it one building with an L shape to it?
The lightning is really neat on this pic.

Sampdoria In reply to chasedwolf [2007-04-20 14:16:08 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the observation and studios query. The towers are indeed on top of a base which contains 4 stories of parking and offices. Its the norm for large buildings like these to have their own parking space.
There are actually 4 towers which are replicated. In this angle, they may seem as 2. If you can imagine a H-shape from the sky, thats how they are in read life where the '-' forming the link between the 4 segments of '|' and '|'
Cheers!

hey. what's the poly count of this baby and how long did it take you to render it?
π: 0 β©: 1
Sampdoria In reply to zoomzoom [2007-01-27 07:56:02 +0000 UTC]
Hi, I rendered it in 2 stages to decrease Polycount nightmares - 1 stage was with all the cars and greenary. Next was the building itself. The building took around 40 mins to render on hi-res.

Thatβs what I am talking about man!! I got into a little argument with a guy who made a render of a castle and told me that it takes him 45 hours to render it. The scene has 1β700β000 polys... I think its totally unnecessary coz 45 hours later it still looks 3D... u know... so what's the point then. I told him that there are faster ways to render perhaps he is not rendering it right and he went off at me... so i just decided to ask around... rendering is really not my scene, but nothing i ever did rendered longer the 15 minutes per frame... heh. Thatβs why I just don't get concept of 45 hours.

Sampdoria In reply to zoomzoom [2007-01-27 10:29:49 +0000 UTC]
I used to do that in my early years, it was really frustrating, I sometimes also ended up with a superheavy 3D file which has easier chances of corrupting. I later learnt more from collegues and rendering ng's.
Now i work it to the basics, for large scale exterior 3d's, always try to split your building, landscaping, cars etc. Remember that by placing cars, you are drastically increasing polycount.
Another point is to pshop in the background with a resonable sky bitmap (one renders the bldg and saves it with an alpha channel) and also even the vegetation. I have tonnes of works which I finished off this way to meet deadlines.
It was an interesting question. I will check out exact polycount for this one and other works where I rendered in one shot.
Cheers.

Yes. Thatβs smart. And a good idea with a sky box. I may use it!
And by the way... I started a huge personal project to make downtown of a near by city. Since itβs my first official city I may need some help and pointers... I mean... i been modeling for over two years now and know basic stuff like layer and all... but do u mind if i note you with some questions or maybe screen shots...?

That sounds cool, my replies might be late incase of work coming up but please send me any queries or opinions you'd like. When modelling cities, its important to mass model the setup first so that you can compare to the actual city.
Very important is getting the building floor levels right - its general practice world wide for modern towers 1970s onwards to have floors which are 3.2m to 4.2m high. Usually they are towards the 3.2-3.6m level inorder to reduce construction costs. The lower floor usually is a combination of 2-3 floors.
Another thing that will help you is using Google Earth to get the exact floor plan dimensions in metres/feet. We profesionallty use to speed up works.

One step a head of you mate... google earth is the only way this project is even possible... lol. Been using it from the start.
Of cause I plan to do the entire model in low poly first. Just basic shapes like boxes. Street layout and buildings... then when its all proportional overall, I am going to go for details, street lights... trees... bridges and so on... at that point i be able to determine what i will do with textures and what i will model.
Thatβs the plan... been at it for a few days now... and got about 20 blocks down... its already starting to look like a city. I am very excited about this project. Just something I am going to be managing between work and my other animation projects...
Will keep in touch.
