"Slenderman Slenderman, take this child", 2015. Pencil and ink on paper, photo and digital composition, 30 x 40 cm.

Cover for the novel of the same title, written by Lee McGeorge.

This is the hardest cover that I've done so far. I spent months working on many different proposals, but for one reason or another Lee was not fully convinced by none of them.

When we finally reached a general idea of how the cover should be, I naively thought that everything would be easier... but I was wrong. The girl was terribly complicated and she went through an endless number of changes, specially on her face. I can not say how many hours it took me, but I spent days and days working on the computer. It's a pity that the final artwork is so small: most of the details that took me so many days are invisible to the viewer.

Then we had the problem of how to present the big attraction, the Slanderman itself. Lee didn't wanted a conventional Slenderman, something in which I also I agreed becuase the book is not the typical Slenderman story, so I made many different versions of the monster using different techniques... around 10 or so, I really can't remember. Lee chose a fully digital figure with a macabre resemblance to a real life monster, the infamous Jimmy Savile (it all makes sense if you read the novel), but when I was near to finish it, Lee changed his mind, and chose one of my first versions of Slenderman, a semi-abstract drawing made on Indian ink.

Luckily, Lee used one of the digital versions in the inner cover!

In the end, Lee was very happy with the cover, and so do I. It is very different to my usual work, but at the same time it have much of my style. If you're a big fan of horror, or if you like Slenderman, I strongly recommend you to read "Slenderman, Slenderman, take this child". The book have recieved very positive reviews, and it's a different approach to the famous character. The novel is very horrific and disturbing, full of scary moments and creepy characters, and something very important: like all good fiction, it have something to say beyond its entertaining value.

Esta es la portada más dificil que he hecho hasta ahora. Pasé meses trabajando en muchas propuestas diferentes, pero por una razón u otra Lee no estaba totalmente convencido de ninguna.

Cuando finalmente llegamos a una idea general de cómo debería ser la portada, pensé que todo sería más fácil, pero estaba equivocado. La chica resultó terriblemente complicada y pasó por un sin fin de cambios, especialmente en su cara. No puedo decir cuántas horas me llevó, pero pasé días y días trabajando en la computadora. Es una lástima que el trabajo final sea tan pequeño: muchos de los detalles que me tomaron tantos días sean invisibles para el espectador.

Luego tuvimos el problema de cómo presentar la gran atracción, el propio Slanderman. Lee no quería un Slenderman convencional, algo en lo que yo estuve de acuerdo porque el libro no es la típica historia de Slenderman, asi que hice muchas versiones diferentes del monstruo utilizando técnicas distintas. Lee eligió una figura totalmente digital con un macabro parecido a un monstruo de la vida real, el infame Jimmy Savile (todo tiene sentido si leen la novela), pero cuando estaba cerca de terminarlo, Lee cambió de opinión, y eligió una de mis primeras versiones de Slenderman, un dibujo semi-abstracto hecho en tinta china.

Por fortuna, Lee utilizó una de las versiones digitales en la cubierta interior.

Al final, Lee quedó muy feliz con la portada, y yo tambien. Es muy diferente a mi trabajo habitual, pero, al mismo tiempo tiene mucho de mi estilo. Si eres un fan del horror, o si te gusta Slenderman, recomiendo encarecidamente que leas "Slenderman, Slenderman, take this child". El libro ha recibido críticas muy positivas, y es un enfoque diferente del famoso personaje. Es una novela horrible y perturbadora, llena de momentos de escalofriantes y personajes tenebrosos, y algo muy importante: como toda buena ficción, el libro tiene algo que decir más allá de su valor de entretenimiento.
