new pages go up every other saturday, though, it looks like there will be a hiatus of a month or two after P14 goes up. I had to redo some pages that I had figured as done and I want to spend November working on a different project. But it's still coming

Hey, so I'm rereading the comic and I have a question or a couple questions. Are you saying here that the Queen screwed herself over by putting too much power into the crown? Is that even possible when she's literally Death? Is she actually dead or did Pariah do something to her?

yes, that's exactly right. she became obsessed with bulking up the power of the crown, overexerted herself, and dissolved. this may come up again, im not sure. theres a scene im kind of on the fence about cutting or fleshing out. yes, she is actually 100% gone.
re "is it possible", that's something i've been thinking a lot about regarding all of them, and really haven't decided for the purposes of the comic - i'm kind of leaving it fuzzy, which is unsatisfying, but idk. take Clockwork for example: All mortals die in time. He has some sort of jurisdiction over that. Does he *cause* them to die though? or does that process just feed/energize him somehow? or is he only really symbolically related to that process - eg has powers that are thematically related to mortality. like, at this point in his lifetime, i really don't so much have a fleshed out idea of what his actual active powers are - more an idea that he is *theoretically* extremely powerful, but that almost nobody has ever witnessed him actually exercising that power. part of his identity is tied up in the refusal to act despite the technical ability to do so to great effect. So maybe he has a great awareness of the passage of time, can tell you when any given person or thing is going to die/end, but whether he actually causes that death in the sense that if he were gone or changed that people would cease to die of old age is really ambiguous. so, i've had the same sort of mental struggle regarding the Queen. does she cause death? or is her existence a function of people's belief in death given form? im really leaning more toward the latter - these spirits exist in part because the Infinite Realms/ectoplasm is very sensitive to thoughts, ideas, and belief, and so patches of the Realms or vortices of energized ectoplasm might get saturated with an idea, that has the potential to evolve self-awareness, and become a sort of self-sustaining loop. like for instance
people believe in death as an idea -> a patch of the Realms becomes saturated with this idea and develops awareness -> that new ghost starts to develop her own understanding and interpretations of her own meaning, influenced by the ideas that spawned her but not fully controlled by them -> Queen Death, who now has very real powers related to death due to amount of power she consumes+her own beliefs about her own abilities.
if that all makes sense.
sorry, this was probably all a lot more abstract and fuzzy than you were going for XD

No, that makes perfect sense! I do understand that since it isn't the main drive of the story you may have not fleshed it out and I also get that keeping it fuzzy is on purpose. I get what your talking about. There's this creatures in Buddhism called a Tulpa, and I think that's what your going with. Based on belief where people believed it so strongly it gained it's own consciousness and because it's own thing. So Queen Death isn't Death, but the idea of Death. That makes sense, and that's the same with the other too I'm guessing.
I feel like Clockwork may be more directly related to Time and Death, cause we do see (in the show) that he could change time and everything after that point, if he wanted. I can definitely see going either way for the whole 'does he cause the deaths' or 'just gain energy from deaths'. Either way could work, I actually kind of like the idea of him being a being outside of the other Messengers of Death. Cause you did kind of imply that with the whole blowing out the candle and then the person died. So maybe he's like the catalyst for Death if that makes sense?
Like he grants death to people. He gives them the gift of death but may not actually be Death themself. He allows Death to come and take the person, I guess could be a way to describe it. Cause his power of time, is the most unstoppable of all the messengers. Everyone else, humans and creatures can avoid but you can't outrun time. I also love that idea that Clockwork himself doesn't know how powerful he is cause he's never tried or needed to flex his powers. I really love that idea and I can't wait to see his bewildered expression when it finally hits home how powerful he is.

Ahhh, yes! that fits pretty well with what i have in mind.
Clockwork I've definitely been thinking of as "the Time aspect of Death", at this stage in his life.
All of them are really catalysts for Death - that's kind of what I meant by the "messengers" thing. I wonder if one way to spin it that would make sense is that people would still die of all these different things if these spirits didn't exist, and they're not directly responsible for every single mortal death that happens, but they take over unusual cases and can "step in" or override if the whim takes them. I mean, definitely in the case of the triplets I imagine them just sort of traipsing around causing mayhem as they please, whereas Clockwork is a little more, ah, deliberate.
Really the arc of the entire comic is about him changing his ideas of what time means, and therefore who he is, sort of growing into "Time" in a much broader sense (...and kicking and screaming for most of the way). Currently I would say he has some sense of how powerful he is in broad terms... but he's blinkered by his very limited understanding of what time is and how it works, and what his role is. He's got dogmatic beliefs about the world and himself that preventing him from understanding what's even possible, if that makes sense, and in the comic at least ghosts pretty literally are what they believe they are. Thanks for asking about this, btw, talking it out always helps me sort of flesh out my own ideas for where I'm going with things.
You will definitely get a view of at least some of that reaction before this scene is over.

You're welcome! I also love talking out my ideas and that can help them flow easier!
That all makes sense. I really love the idea of this being Clockwork's own personal journey, growing into the almost God level powers we see him have in the show. I also love the whole 'ghost are literally what they believe they are'. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for explain the bit with 'people would still die of these different things if these spirits didn't exist.' that clears it up for me.

YAY!! A lovely update!
Take your time and have fun with your hiatus! Can't wait to see what you come up with for pages and other art! 83
EDIT
Also I legit just NOW realized after re-reading your comic, Clockwork doesn't have his scar yet in any of the flashback scenes and I am now SO PAINFULLY curious as to how you intend to possibly show how he got!!! QwQ

well the hiatus won't start til december, i still have a couple ready pages before this scene that needs re-paneled. i'm hoping it won't be all that long, maybe a month or two??? the main thing is i don't like posting a scene until it's done, bc i like to be able to tweak the language and flow of the narration after it's all drawn and don't want to post myself into a corner. and in cases like these, sometimes i nearly finish a scene before realizing the pacing is way off <_< but i'd rather be really happy with every page than get them out on schedule, so. oh well!
ahaha your comments give me life XD i've been wondering if anyone noticed that. pariah has not yet earned his eye scar, either. you'll find out, and soonish ;D fun fact, that's actually the exact moment that i'm redrawing orz

welcome and hope you're enjoying it so far!
i still have two pages that will go up on 11/17 and 12/1, and then there will be a break after that. i don't like to start posting a scene before it's done because i do a lot of text changes right up to the end! ^^'
