You know, this is kinda turning out more drama and less comicky the more I develop it...I can't decide if that's a good thing or not.I'm sort of struggling with the sort of "reality show" feel of it, how to balance between the three characters...basically I've decided I'm just going to go with what little plot corners I feel like regardless of short-term balance. Don't worry, everyone will get their air time in due time lol.
And hey, let me know if my transitions are crap. I know what's going on in between frames but I don't know how clear it is to you guys, so if I make a jump that isn't clear please point it out.

oh jeez, i'd have to go on the old laptop to find my notes...vague ideas i do remember:
Near gets some kind of idea for a solar thingy and doodles it all over a quiz; he's all worried that he's going to get in trouble about it bc he doesn't get the quiz back when everyone else does, which mello gives him a bit of a hard time for. the prof ends up keeping him after class, so he's all freaking out about it, but it turns out the prof is pals with Elliot. he'd been impressed by the doodles and showed it to elliot, thinking he'd be interested, which he was, so he wanted to introduce the two. long story short elliot asks him if he'll take on the assistantship he's got open (the one mello's applying for). near is completely blown away but extremely happy.
so he goes tripping off and then he gets a phone call. it's his mom, and at first he's so excited that he starts babbling to her about it, but she cuts him short and gives him some bad news that shuts him up completely.
he gets back to the dorm and mello and matt want to know what's up. he's in a daze and sorta absently says elliot wanted to hire him. mello completely loses his shit. he's mad that he got it, mad that he's not even happy about it, etc. so he pretty much verbally rips into near. near is already upset and can't deal, so he brushes him off and leaves again while mello's in the middle of a sentence.
he's out sitting on a curb or something somewhere and linda comes across him. there is obviously something wrong and she asks, and he doesn't particularly want to confide in her but he doesn't know who else he can talk to so he does. it turns out his cat got run over and killed. he's particularly upset bc his dad had been letting the cat outside during the day so she wouldn't be underfoot, when she's exclusively an indoor cat.
linda loves animals and is all PETAish and is completely sympathetic and understanding of his attachment to his cat. she goes in for the side-hug and he kinda freaks out, says point blank that he's not interested in her as more than a friend so would she please stop flirting with him. she's at first surprised, then laughs it off. she tells him she already has a boyfriend, and she's sorry if it came off that way bc it was not her intent. he relaxes a bit and they start to hang out more as time goes on.
incidentally, i had ideas that the boyfriend might be the super stereotypical poet/artiste kind of guy, but i hadn't developed him much beyond that.
mello and near's rivalry gets worse and worse over time. i had ideas that it might devolve temporarily into a prank war that involves a lot of rube goldberg-esque constructions on near's part and a lot of expertise in inflicting humiliation on mello's. on some occasion (hadn't come up with a specific trigger, but figured it would be some slight, whether perceived or actual, against mello's family) it gets physical. mello throws a few punches and near takes a couple marks (wasn't sure exactly what, maybe a split lip and some bruises, idk, but not anything that could be easily hidden). once he comes down from his temper a little, mello panics. he's gotten in trouble for assault before, and he's afraid near will press charges and he'll be kicked out of school. he starts avoiding near like the plague, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
soon after i had a short scene scripted out where linda and near are studying at a coffee shop or the library or something, and she's asking why he hasn't reported mello. near basically tells her he doesn't want to draw attention to the situation because if his dad finds out it will be one more reason to think near's a sissy.
throughout this whole thing, mello is spending more and more time focusing on the clothes shop, to the point where he doodles ideas for clothing designs on his notes nearly as much as near does on his. i was thinking at some point he realizes he loves that way more than any of the other things he's studying, but he doesn't feel like designing clothes is a 'real' job. he struggles a lot and is basically miserable bc he's running himself ragged on a bunch of stuff he realizes he doesn't really want to do, but feels like he has to.
anyway their rivalry, idk. i had a vague idea they might have something they're working on together, like some kind of robotics competition or something where they both want to beat tim...? hadn't really figured it out. likewise i never really figured out how i would handle near's tension with his dad, or matt's with his parents.
what i DID have worked out for matt was a continuation of his ill-advise pursuing of linda after her boyfriend breaks up with him, with near stuck as an unwilling go-between. i had some script written up where near is listing all the reasons they would be a bad match and matt is coming up with bad arguments against them, such as that pancakes are vegetarian. at some other point he buys a small cactus (to prove to linda he likes nature too) and puts it in their dorm room, claiming it's for feng shui purposes when mello expresses doubt about the whole thing, and eventually ends up overwatering it. i also had a scene mostly written that went something like
- in a previous episode matt had convinced linda to go out for coffee or something with him
- near goes to visit linda and finds her furiously painting. he asks why she's mad, she demands to know why he thinks she's mad, and he points out that she's painting torpedos falling on a fast food joint and she only ever uses war imagery when she's angry.
- next shot, near is talking to matt and wants to know from his side of things why linda is so upset.
- a flashback to their date. she is wearing a tshirt that says something about saving a particular species of endangered lichens, and he says something about being all about saving lycans. he's wearing his Blow Up the Whales tshirt.
- back in the present, Matt claims to have no idea what near is talking about.
that's all i remember off the top of my head...there were a lot of plot threads that i didn't really have clear ideas for tying up :\

Hmm, very sad that you couldn't continue the comic, but that is the way some things go. I'm glad what was made was made, though, since your's is probably the only AU for the series I like. I was so hoping, though, that at the end we'd learn that L was the camera-man or something, because the idea makes me giggle.

Maybe his school will be cool and have a fresh waffle maker with its logo made into it. I know it is not as good as fresh pancakes, but it is a pretty good alternative. At least it was for me, until we moved into a real place and my roommate started making me pancakes. ~K

I was just thinking that - it's not just all funny all the time but I actually felt with Matt here. I think it's a good thing. The transitions haven't bothered me so far, it's easy to spot when a new scene starts.
I also love that Matt alone speaks in that font!
