Description Zuko's new point of view.

Recently read amanda91's completely amazing Zuko fic Three Years at Sea , which I cannot recommend strongly enough. Since I'm terrible at commenting and have been meaning to work on my composition/perspective/color technique, I thought I'd do a bazillion illustrations for it. I was going to lump several to a single file, but I couldn't fit them together in a way I liked so I'm just uploading them separately.

I'm surprised I never thought about Zuko's vision changing! I guess because his scarred eye seems to still be functional, rather than blind (still having the same iris as the other one, and moving in tandem with it), but you're right, the stiff, permanent squint would probably still affect things... very interesting way of portraying that here! And I like the bright colors.

(Also, I just realized that sailor looking up must be seeing Zuko's scar for the first time, after the bandage is off... people's reactions like that must have been rather traumatic for Zuko too... poor Zuko! )

i hadn't thought too much about it either til i read the fic! in retrospect it seemed pretty wild that an injury that bad would have no impact on the eye at all, even if it wasn't complete blindness on that side. teen zuko had a rough time...

thanks for commenting!

You're very welcome! And aww, it seems that fanfic isn't there anymore, when I clicked the link... that's a shame! It sounded like a really cool one.

This isn't really the same, but I'll say it anyway. I got glasses in eighth grade (so i was the same age as zuko when he got his scar) it took a long time to get used to it. So I feel your pain. I must be hard seeing out of that eye.

yeah. it was weird how it never seemed to affect him in the show. i mean, it was a pretty serious-looking scar.

Poor Zuzu...Took me a moment to understand what was up with the picture, but I like the effect. I don't think too many people realize how his vision is truly impaired by his scarred eyelids and such...

Yeah, he never seems to actually be affected by the scar in the show, but it's pretty odd that he would be burned so seriously without damage to the eye.
thanks, I'm glad you like it!

I love finding issues like that in series...It's there for the effect, but they don't want his epic abilities to be hindered in any way, though I think it should also make his abilities stronger, just as Aang and even Sokka train blindfolded...Just a thought.

You're very welcome! ^-^

well, that was one of the things i really liked about amanda's fic, was that she actually did have him training blindfolded and learning to cope with and work around the handicap, so that by the time of the series it wouldn't have been noticeable. i wish there had been something hinting more that way in the show, but oh well.

Ah, that does sound cool. Sometimes, I wonder why fanfictions deal with much more realistic approaches to the past/present/future of series. That totally includes ATLA...

well, i think it's a lot of things. a really good example of that i always think of is the issue of a lot of large-scale earthbending compromising the structural integrity of the ground. rayemars addresses this really well in a 6-part fic based on The Art of War, about Azula and the takeover of Ba Sing Se. it's a pretty serious thing, but of course it never comes up in the show.

with shows like Avatar, I'm sure that part of it is that it's pitched for kids, and being too realistic would kind of kill parts of the show--make them overly complicated, or bring up issues that are difficult to make understandable or interesting to kids. a lot of the more realistic interpretations that come out in the fanon tend to be the work of people older than the target audience.

And just generally i think there's a tendency to simplify in television. With a medium like longform writing, it's easier to sort of address these sorts of issues, because you can exposit stuff really quickly without having to 'act' it out, so to speak--you don't have to somehow slide it into the dialogue and try to make it sound natural. there's no time constraint, too--when you're trying to write these 22-minute episodes, a lot gets cut just to make the stories fit the time frame.

another thing that probably comes into play is that the writers and animators are trying to tell this particular story with a lot of different elements, some of which are important to the story and help the plot and character development along in a way they want, and others which get downplayed or even cut because they don't really develop anything in the intended direction. with fanon, though, people get fixated on particular people or aspects of the show, and sometimes put a lot more thought or analysis into one tiny facet than the original creators either had time to or felt was important. so you see a lot more explanation and reasoning of really minor characters, or time periods that really don't get more than a reference in the original show.

so while I wish we got to see more of Zuko sailing around and how his scar may or may not have impaired his vision in the show, he's not the main character and I'm not sure what it would really add to the show other than a bit of realism, so I see why they didn't have anything about it. Even if it makes me a bit sad, lol.

I was thinking of the bit where he goes up to the bridge after having the bandages removed.
