Description Ah, I was talking to a few folks a while back about figure drawing--something about drawing from life or something. These are some drawings I did in like... January-ish? Done in sharpie marker on 36in by 24in newsprint from live models.

The key, I think, is to draw quickly, and focus on the curves of the body, and it's major arches--> spine, shoulders, hips. Also, drawing quickly helps. Make sure you do a loose--gestural--drawing before you start making things perfect. Don't work one area at a time. Work the whole image. You don't want to spend an hour on a foot and find out it's ten times larger than it was supposed be compared to the other body parts.

Yeah, my drawings from real life a much better than my anime drawings >> I know. Drawing realistically from life or photos just... bores me XD It's not particularly difficult once you know the tricks ^^ Maybe, one day, I shall make a tutorial explaining how to draw anything from real life...

I truly consider your anime drawings better than your realistic ones, but I guess thats pretty much taste ^^

figure drawings are awesome...i do agree that drawing from life does work better...while drawing from photos sometimes end up being flat (based from my inexperience)...and speed drawings are much more life like...one captures the moment in the motion and gestures the hand makes

That's what my art teacher said, when we did gesture/figure drawings a couple times last year - the 'spine, shoulders, hips' thing.
I really like to do quick things like these, even though mine aren't as detailed as yours. But these are so neat! Very nice. :3

thanks for the lesson...no charge right?

you should put out some focus lessons instead. explaining just the way you do things, artists who don't know what to do need some guidance. I myself need that help.

this gives people a way to improve by trying different approaches to drawing.

nice work though.

gahhh I love these ;_____;
i did figure drawing for 5 classes or so and it was so much fun but the results weren't nearly this good >_> (you're too good). and i really liked these 'cos we did quick ones, like 30sec, and 1/2 min too, but no more than that I have some here --> [link] but yours kick butt >_> lol
I really like your flowing lines ;__;

sashas In reply to A-Xofia [2007-08-20 01:00:14 +0000 UTC]

Aw, they won't let me take anymore figure drawing classes. I don't have the prerequisites ;__; plus they only let me take 5 classes a semester.

I remember those sketches... I faved them ^^ ... cuz I love em' like that. I like your method, it's so much cleaner and economic than mine. Lines all over the place...

I rather obsessive about smooth lines... I dunno, when I was finishing the final class and my teacher was grading our final work, he said if it was one thing that made my art different it was my lines... they were never pointy. XD

A-Xofia In reply to sashas [2007-09-16 15:14:33 +0000 UTC]

yeah >_>;; but your round ones still look a lot prettier ;__; seriously love how the body flows just due to the lines alone...
and yes, I've noticed before: you just never use pointy lines
oh, and sorry 'bout that, I forgot, you had already seen it lol <3
bahh and that sucks...I won't have anymore figure drawing classes either >_< that sucks, I wish I could take more too...

Sa-chan, you are a genius.
Why didn't I ever think to post something like this?

It just gets so tiring explaining time after time that drawing just one portion of the body at a time doesn't work... now I can just link to this and say, "Be the smart monkey." and then I won't have to work as much ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to KyteGlory [2007-08-20 00:35:00 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you.
You did think of do it... I'm just stealing your thoughts D:

LOL, I know, what you mean. People will not just take advice. There were people in my class who would have drawn so much better had they just done a decent gestural drawing or something. I mean 4 months of class and they will NOT listen to a teacher they are paying money to be taught by... *rolls eyes* They're probably still spending thirty minutes shading a nose or something...

They looks great. Yeah, I admit, figre drawing can be boring and not a favorite thing to do. But it is helpful.

sashas In reply to BotanofSpiritWorld [2007-08-20 00:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I enjoy figure drawing a lot more than I do still life... I think I drawing anime more because I don't use references for those drawings. I've got to think intensely about how all of the body parts go together... whether things look natural or not. It's more difficult, so I feel prouder when I finish a drawing, knowing what I had to go through. : )

I had to do figure drawing at a state art program I attended this past month and for the most part we did 20 minute stints. I was about to stab my brain in with my pencil because we took so stinkin' long with just one pose (the previous week we did two 20 minutes for the same pose).

I was so freakishly happy when we whittled it down to either five minutes or ten minutes. Because you had so much less time, you could actually learn what goes where and what the muscle looks like rather than having to constantly change it around because the model moved.

But my stupid instructor always complained we were going "too fast". And screamed at me "because I wasn't learning".
I hope that man chokes on his own ego. ):<

sashas In reply to obake-shojo [2007-08-20 00:25:50 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... that's different. The most we'd do a pose for was 4 hours. 2 hours one day, 2 hours the next. But those were midterm and final assignments. And, we'd usually do several 1-5 minute gestural drawings, and only a few longer poses... which would be like 45 minutes at most.

I like the quicker poses myself. The initial strokes I lay down for the body are always the most interesting and dramatic. LOL, I've never had a teacher tell me I was drawing to fast O.o My first teacher--> [link] does the figure for a living and he demanded that we have a very solid drawing by the end of 5 minutes. He would put us through drills.... so I don't know what your teacher was talking about XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

obake-shojo In reply to sashas [2007-08-20 01:48:11 +0000 UTC]

Let's see here...he wanted to see the actual steps individually...basic body shapes (ie: circles, cylinders, blahblahblah), define & fix the body proportions, fine details the last five minutes of the pose.

He also didn't want us hopping from one area to the next (I can see how that is plausible and for good reason) but I personally start/continue on another spot if what I'm working on isn't going along smoothly.

It was basically his way or the highway without considering each person's own strategy of how they draw the human figure.

In some ways he was a great teacher, but other than that he had a bad attitude on teaching high school aged people and didn't like the idea that I already had a grasp on the human figure and I had my own way of going about drawing it.
