    “I’m in disbelief this is my last flight with you for HCl, buddy..” Lucifer murmured as he gave Disturbia some pets during the cruising altitude portion of the long haul flight. The thoroughbred was well accustomed to the international flights however the 20 hour journey was their longest trip yet. File folder in hand, Lucifer absentmindedly flipped through the documents, making sure that he hadn’t missed anything since the quarantine this go around was a bit more complex. ‘You’re wearing yourself thin.. Rest…’ Disturbia seemed to say with slightly widened eyes and a concerned expression as he gave the other’s hand a nuzzle. “Alright..” Lucifer quietly relented, giving the stallion a few pets before going to pass out in the seat.

    As Lucifer slept, Disturbia stayed awake and reflected on the year while munching on hay from his hay bag. The year had brought its own unique challenges and victories and the thoroughbred recalled the personal journey his rider had undergone through the whole of the champions league. Vienna was a major wake up call.. Lucifer’s nerves at an all time high and the effects leaking into the thoroughbred’s own hubris. A sobering 38th place brought forth an overhaul on how the pair worked together. Administrative work occupied the spring with Lucifer handling all of the files, folios, and scores for the Fireflies remotely while tuning up the thoroughbred for his performance in August. Summer was an enjoyable time for Disturbia, it was fun to travel to Israel, to see the flamingos, feel the summer sun on his coat, and to see Lucifer for the first time in a while, happy. The stallion wasn’t exactly sure how useful the vet really was, considering he was an easy traveler, but the morale boost was noticeable and they charged into Caesarea reborn. He remembered Lucifer pacing nervously, “31st isn’t bad.. Not great either.. We can do better..” The stallion knew that their performance in Sydney needed to balance out the crippling anxieties tied to Vienna and almost dangerous hubris they had in Caesarea. He shook his head, huffing a bit, and deciding to sleep the rest of the way there, the reflection was a task on the mind.

    They drove to the HCl venue, four days early to have ample time to settle in. Lucifer hopped out of the car, Astro following right after, politely by the other’s heels. He figured if Disturbia had to do the quarantine already, it couldn’t hurt to bring the greyhound along. He unloaded Disturbia and got him settled into his stall before going off to find his teammate Dai or Duncan and company. The journey brought them to the pub, figuring that he could use the drink and chances were high that he would find his friends there already. What he did not expect was having to come between the two to break up what would’ve been a nearly incriminating bar fight. Lucifer hated that he knew the reason for their fight but his efforts were focused on calming Duncan down and getting him in a proper state and head space for the grand prix later on. Later that night he met with Stephan, both to get some advice for what lay ahead and to get some stress relief.

    The morning of the show, Lucifer braided and groomed Disturbia before tacking him up in their characteristic blue toned tack. While he loved competing for the team, it was a welcome relief to not have to don the dayglo bright green accents. The thoroughbred felt relieved that the afternoon was stress free and that they both were in the proper mindset to give it their all. Lucifer lead the stallion out and gracefully vaulted on before heading off to the warm up arenas. The pair warmed up and got accustomed to the warmer weather that came with the approach of summer down under. As the third horse was announced, they headed over ring side and waited for their turn.

    “Competitor #5, Lucifer Archangel riding BTs Devil in the Details, riding as individuals will now be entering the ring” came the voice over the loudspeaker followed by the start bell. Disturbia cantered off at a healthy pace towards the Cadeux sponsor vertical. Lucifer guided him over before they set their sights onto the fireflies team jump. Fond memories of the trials, tribulations, and strong camaraderie of their team flooded his mind as they sailed over the softly glowing vertical. Next came the combination of the Sydney liverpool and the Monarch’s vertical. Here the pair was reminded of their lessons learned in Vienna on striding and proper timing. They sailed over and charged towards the middle of the arena

    With each stride, time seemed to slow, and Lucifer was more and more aware of the thoroughbred’s ground eating yet controlled strides, his timed breaths, and twitches of his tail as they approached the obstacle. Lucifer looked forward, half illuminated by the cool floodlights, and felt himself retreat slightly in his own mind. ‘God, we really made it didn’t we.. We’ve been through so much, yet here we are..in this marvel of a stage..in front of these crowds..five jumps away from the conclusion to this whirlwind of a league.. It’s been hard, yet Disturbia has come so far. We’ve become so much more in tune with each other.. I feel like we are ending on a good note..’ he thought to himself as time sped up again. Disturbia launched upwards, lifting his back hooves high enough not to clip the rail, eyes already honed in on their next jump.They had entered as greenhorns, plagued by the anxieties of not feeling welcome amongst such greats and emerged with a new found confidence, armed with lessons and experiences to learn from. HCl was the guiding light they needed and Sydney was the light at the end of the tunnel. They had made it through and were much better and learned from it and for that they were grateful.

Horse's pedigree and best successes: Disturbia comes from a strong pedigree of British national hunt and steeplechase award winners. His sire having won over £829,000 in winnings over a five year career and his dam having won over £394,000 in three years, Disturbia has a very strong line of jumping talent in his pedigree. He is qualified as a world class thoroughbred with The Jockey Club and has placed within the top 3 in his shows outside of the HCL circuit. While the pair have been shakey in their performances at Vienna and Cesearea they grow stronger and more confident with every leg. At 10 years old, there is only room upwards for this stallion.

Rider's backstory and best successes: Lucifer has had a very solid competition season this year as well as overall. While he is well known for his performances with Dante in the Olympics and HARPG World Cup rings, placing 6th and 2nd respectively, he has had solid performances on the international scale this year. Placing 1st in the 2019 AUSe Olympics with Dante and competing at the Toronto Masters with the warmblood gelding Totilas Colour.

Style of horse and rider: Lucifer serves as a voice of reason for Disturbia when int he showjumping ring. The pair become more and more in tune as the year progresses with Disturbia learning more caution and Lucifer growing more confident in the stallion's abilities. The pair excel at the precision necessary for combinations and have perfected strides and take offs as Sydney approaches. With every leg, their speed improves with their growing confidence.

Things Harchie should know: Sydney is the pair's least stressful round as they are participating as individuals this time around. There is a notable maturation with both horse and rider in comparison to Vienna and this should reflect in their performance for the finals.

Artists Note: I'm amazed I pulled this off since I've been quite awfully sick since Tuesday. I had a ton of fun getting to play around with the blues of my pair's individual tack and the coloration of night time and the flood lights of the arena. I feel more comfortable shading in a more realistic style with this leg and had fun playing around with the shading and lighting in this piece. It is absolutely surreal that this whirlwind of a journey comes to an end after this leg. Thank you so so much to Cookie1992 and Tamashi-Sama for keeping me sane and being absolutely amazing friends through this wild journey. A huge thank you to my teammates Heartsong-Estate and BlueFire-Phoenix as well, I know our team has had it rough but you guys are real troopers!
