Artist's Notes: Commission done for . These are the "lantern skarks" of Great Lakes Earth, a group of squaliform sharks unrelated to the lantern sharks of our Earth. From left to right top to bottom they are:

Deep Sea Willowisp: a relatively small lantern shark with patterns reminescent of certain Willowisp lepidopterans, the bioluminescent markings on its body are flashed in alternating patterns to confuse predators and possibly used for communication between individuals of the same species, based on my original Willowisp drawing and the sharkopath from The Future is Wild documentary

Sea Specter: a scaleless partially transparent shark, based on the x ray fish

Thorny Lantern Shark: a variety of lantern shark covered in venomous spines, passed on prehistoric acanthodians and various venomous dogfish

Malocchio: easily identified by its enormous eyes and eye like patterns, based on the Italian superstition of the malocchio

Stygian Miasma: a very small variety of lantern shark that swim together in gigantic, closely knit schools, based on real world lanternfish whi8ch are so numerous that they create a false bottom for the ocean floor which perplexed scientists when sonar was first discovered

Sea Stirge: an ectoparasitic species with retactable jaws that survives by biting chunks out of larger animals and swimming away without actually killing their prey, based on the cookie cutter shark and the viper dogfish
