I can't tell you what species it is off hand (there are almost 300 species in the US and it would be hard to id without the specimen in hand), but I can tell you that it is a cuckoo wasp in the family Chrysididae. Most species are parasitic on wasp and bee larvae.

i'm beginning to wonder! no one? has yet seriously placed it as anything specific. it's not hairy....not furry....not a fly...hmmm

well it's definitely a hymenopteran of some sort. Not a fly cause it's got two sets of wings. Thinking maybe a sweat bee of some sort.

so far? the basic info that i've gotten was that it was a possible Blue Orchard Mason Bee...and a possible parasite on wasps?? other info i'd read was that they really liked cherry trees.........hmmm

I could not find it in my guides but I think (maybe perhaps) it is a Bee Fly (family Bombyliidae). I base this on wing structure and shap as well as body shape. the color? Zero luck. Did the critter appear to have a beak or proboscis?

I think I crossed the weevil and bee replies...sorry.
I agree with the Play-Doh weevil ID, the bee ID not so much.

Wow.. thats almost amazingly pretty for a bee like bug.. I'm terrified of bees but this sucker is actually beautiful.
I would probably still run from it, but hey least maybe not so fast? Hehe.
