Description
Not a caterpillar...but a larva of the Elm Sawfly. This variety is North America's largest....with a gorgeous blue stripe running down the back with small matching blue dots along both sides of it's body. The adult will be a blackish/purple creature, often mistaken as wasps or even bees.
Although I'm not a sawfly fan, these larva are just amazing in their specteral beauty.
This one is curled up on the underside of a Hexigonal-pored Polypore fungus.

Please know that there is NO way that I can thank each one of you individually for you're 'fav' on this image...but know that each and every one is appreciated!

Not too crazy about the god awful watermark, but aside from that this is a beautifully, disgustingly, amazingly, inspirational image!! There's a certain "charm" to it and the colors are wonderful! Congrats on the DD!

I love your work! I live in Iowa so I see some of the same things, but can't make a decent shot out of them! I think it's great that you can make art out of the ordinary things you find while wandering around in nature. Beautiful stuff!

What an incredible little creature, and you've captured every bit of that. I love the contrast between the blue and the orange too, and the spongy and smooth textures. What a lucky find!
