Description
Edit: I've got several comments of people who are wondering how they can't install their patterns. I resolved every problem and that's ALWAYS because people forget something, because if you follow every step, then it works 100% everytime ^^
If you're planning to ask me why you can't use your pattern please check this :
- your file has to be a .bmp file;
- it should have the size 512x512 px;
- it must keep transparency, for exemple a .jpeg (that turns transparency into white areas) turned into a .bmp file won't work because the transparency already has been deleted;
- your file must be in grayscale mode (a rgb file turned into black&white isn't a grayscale file! ^^)
If you follow those steps, there's not a single reason your pattern won't show!
But if you still don't succeed to install it, don't hesitate to show me your pattern in the comments and I'll tell you what's wrong ^^
If you don't know what transparency is, check this out: sta.sh/01w1mzfguufp -> sta.sh/01mw2b623lhm
Last summer, I searched how to install patterns on SAI, because I don't really like to use it with photoshop... So now, here is a tutorial on how I do this, I hope it would help
Download for full view and have fun
Edit : RGB can also be turned into Grayscale by using the Gimp (free software), just choose image -> mode -> Grayscale

Great tutorial! Do you maybe have some tips on how to make brushes? (so new elemap files, not blotmap) I've tried, but they never turn out the way I want them to. I can't quite work out what the technique is.

I want to know how to make my patterns consistant. I use the programs Sai and Gimp. And whenever I try to resize a pattern it ends up looking strange. It's hard to explain without visuals.

I have patterns that I got from a different website that come in all different sizes. Also, my canvas is probably different from yours but I want the tones I use to be it's original size. My canvas is 873x1400 in pixels, and most of my patterns/tones are 858x1200. How do I know that it's the correct size or that the pattern is not too small or big.
Does it have to be 512x512 px?

Sayuki-Art In reply to Kemono-Haru [2013-08-25 16:30:21 +0000 UTC]
yep, if it's not 512x512px this won't work ^^ maybe if you do not want to resize your pattern you can crop a part of it to make it a 512x512px, but only do this for regular patterns or else you'll have a strange surprise ^^

I downloaded the same pattern pack as you,turned them grayscale and turned them the correct size (some of them)
On some,the pattern doesn't work at all and on others,the pattern works,but there's the line I drew aswell. unu

what are the names of the patterns that didn't work? it may be the ones which don't have the transparency...

All of them have transparency.
Even,as I previously said,it even shows a line I've drawn over the pattern.

Hello. I'm getting into paint tool sai and I download the full version. I wanted to add some textures and use this tutorial (very helpful btw) but I have a little problem...
I followed very step and made sure I did everything correctly, but it won't work at all.
I even downloaded different downloads of sai, and it still won't seem to work. I think maybe the picture I use isn't transparent so it doesn't show up or something like that yet I'm not quiet sure.
Here is the picture I used [link]
If that's the problem then how would I make it transparent? Sorry if this may confusing...

yeah this pic isn't transparent ^^'
to know if the pattern you're using is transparent or not, you must see through it, here is an exemple [link] [link]
hope it helps ^^

I don't think you will find a grayscale file... To turn a normal file to grayscale like my tutorial shows is the best way to find one xD there's many free softwares which enable you to do that
