It's been a week. No, more than a week. Eight days without anybody to talk to except Lavender.

Oh, and Mateo. Mateo visited the very next day, just like he said. He kept asking Lavender about Thomas. It was pretty obvious that he was envious of her. Thankfully, she kept Thomas hidden away that night while the two had a few drinks in the kitchen. He could hear their drunk laughter from the room down the hall.

The teenager was lying on the mattress on the floor with his arms bound behind him in a box tie and his legs tied at the ankles and the knees. There wasn't much he could do other than listen to the loud voices in the next room. It was hard to tell what they were talking about, but it seemed like they were reminiscing about "the good old days," whenever those were. Thomas didn't care. He guessed that they were celebrating the job well done. It was sick, the way that they toyed with him like he was nothing more than a pet. He turns onto his side and tries to fall asleep. He can't.

After Mateo eventually leaves at some time past 2 AM, Thomas can hear Lavender bumbling around in the kitchen. Maybe she'll leave him alone until tomorrow.

No such luck. She comes in the room with a pack of beer, shouting about having a first week celebration. He tries to ignore her. He can't.

"Thomas, come on, I know I can find something you'd be interested in!" She forces him to sit up. He grimaces but says nothing. He doesn't know how dangerous she might be with all that alcohol in her system.

"Come ON, don't you have something to say to me? You always got something to say." She ruffles his hair and he clenches his jaw. He's trying hard not to bite her hand.

"I know who you'll talk to. I know- I got this." She leaves the room for a moment and returns with a throwaway cell phone. Thomas's hair stands on end. Lavender taps on the keypad and dials a number. He waits in apprehension as it rings once, twice, then somebody picks up.

"Hello?"

It's Nico.

Thomas nearly has a heart attack. What- Why- How the fuck-

"Um, hello? Who is this?" Nico sounds annoyed.

"Nico!" Thomas gasps. "Nico, oh my god, it's me! I'm-"

Before he can finish, Lavender hangs up. She grins. You can almost hear Thomas's heart break in two. He talked to him! Nico was there! And she just snatched that away from him!

"WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU DO THAT?" he yells, angry tears forming in his eyes. He jerks his arms against the ropes, hoping to maybe loosen them so he can knock her the fuck out. She dances around a bit.

"It was Mateo's idea but he's bad with jokes an' I knew he'd mess it up. I wanna get Nico fuckin' squirming to get you back. Junior detective and all and he still can't find you," she blurbs. Thomas stutters a retort but she keeps rambling.

"Maybe Nico'll finally accept some interviews. He's been hiding from all th' reporters an' people. That'd make a great story: Local Teen's Efforts To Reunite With Lover Aren't Fuckin' Working."

"You're barbaric," Thomas growls. She laughs.

"You're funny. Real funny an' cute. Mateo's so jealous. He wants to buy you."

"What?!" He feels weak.

"Relax, I wouldn't sell you. Plus there's a ransom that needs to be paid and I can wait. Maybe your family should make a gofundme. You know, crowdfunding, 'Please donate to bring Thomas home safely.' But the money's not that important to me, it's the act of getting it, ya know?" Lavender coughs. "Mateo'll understand sooner or later that he can't have you. Bastard's always trying to prove he's above me or something. Like I owe him still." She snorts and takes a drink while Thomas stares at her. She continues to babble.

"Fuckin' years ago and he still won't let it go. He and I are done. I mean, like, this is an exception. I'm on my own now. Been on my own for a while. Gotta let it go." She puts the bottle to her lips again, but it's empty. She opens another one.

"How... how did you get yourself into this?" Thomas asks tentatively. Maybe she'll answer some questions now.

"Bad blood. Maritza died. I spiraled. Left college. Couldn't find work. Mateo got me a job. Didn't I already tell you?" Lavender rubs her eyes.

"Um. Yes. Sorry," he lies. Thomas thinks. "Who's Maritza again?"

"My sister, dumbass. Car crash? Does that ring a bell?" Thomas shakes his head and Lavender groans.

"God, you want me to tell you over and over? Mateo asks the same goddamn questions. Leave some room for me, okay?" She downs about a quarter of the bottle.

"Maritza's car was hit head on by some jackass in a pickup or somethin'. Didn't even see it coming. Like a, like a deer in the headlights. Just like a deer." She points at her deer skull tattoo. "There's your backstory for THAT. Ya happy?" She takes another drink and offers some to Thomas. He shakes his head. This is weird. She's just spilling everything. He cautiously nods at her to continue. Maybe she'll say something useful.

"Mateo's helped me before but now he needs to let it go. I helped him enough. Now I'm on my own. My first real job and everything. My parents would be proud, if they condoned this." She laughs.

Lavender just babbles for maybe an hour before passing out on the floor. Thomas is still awake. It should be morning soon. It's been a long night.
