"I'm trapped, Thomas! I can't- I can't do anything! Mateo's planned something out, I just-"

"How do you KNOW that?"

"Because I worked with Mateo for years! He's always got something to pin down cops and private investigators and everyone. It's what he does!"

"Can't you give the police a tip?"

"They catch him, and he'll throw the blame on me."

"Then take the fall! Please! Nico's life is in danger!" Thomas's big pleading eyes start to water again.

"Please, Lavender. Please help him. I'd do anything."

It's the middle of the night. Lavender withdrew to her room upstairs and left Thomas tied up in the basement to avoid being around him. Maybe the guilt was too much.

He tries not to think about it. It'll just make it hurt more. But Nico...

He keeps tossing and turning on his cot. There's no way he'll be able to sleep. He wonders if Lavender's just as restless.

As if on cue, he hears a creak in the house. He sits up. Maybe Lavender was finally going to talk to him. Maybe she finally has a plan.

Thomas lays back down and pretends to be asleep.

Soft footsteps patter on the floor above him and he pulls his blanket up. Soon enough, the door at the top of the stairs swings open, yellow light washes down on the dusty floor, and the soft footsteps come down. Thomas does nothing as the footsteps approach him.

But he realizes much too late that those footsteps don't belong to Lavender. Before he can do anything, a large hand secures itself over his mouth and another pins him down on the cot, and a sandy voice hisses into his ear.

"Be a good boy and don't make a sound."

Panic rings through his body and he tries to fight, but Mateo's got him trapped. Tears of fear soon start to roll down his cheeks and his muffled yells don't make it out of the basement. Thomas keeps calling and calling for Lavender to help him, but he's all alone with Mateo.

The man takes his hand off Thomas's chest to grab his gun and hold it to his forehead. That gets him to stop real quick.

"There, see, we can be obedient, can't we?"

Thomas blinks tears out of his eyes and looks at his assailant. He's got a duffel bag at his side. It's not hard to guess what that's for. Mateo notices him staring at the bag, grins, then takes the gun away from the boy's head.

"I brought this just in case," he says, patting the bag, "But it looks like Lavender already wrapped you up quite nicely for me."

He takes out a rag and a roll of duct tape and uses them to gag Thomas while the boy sobs helplessly. He just needs Lavender to hear him, but the rag in his mouth and the tape over his lips muffle every sound he makes. He knows it's useless, but he fights anyways. Lavender's ropes are, as usual, impossible to get out of. Mateo grins down at the boy, hoists him over his shoulder, and makes his way up and out of the basement. Thomas knows that this is his last chance to get Lavender to come save him, so he gives it all he's got and thrashes around, kicking the walls and yelling as loud as he can. Mateo swears under his breath and hurries down the hall and out the door, throws Thomas into the open door of his truck, jumps in and drives off. They're gone.

Boy, that was easy. Mateo rubs his nose and leans back in the driver's seat, looking at the long road ahead of them. He turns up the radio to drown out Thomas's stifled cries. This wasn't how he wanted this to go down, but Lavender gave him no choice. That sneaky bitch should know better than to cross him.

"Quiet down, kid. I can't even hear myself think," Mateo grumbles. Thomas is still yelling and struggling to get untied. The kidnapper rolls his eyes and focuses on his shitty driving. In the rear view mirror, he sees two lights gaining on him. Shit, is that Lavender? He half expected her not to follow, and half expected her to be too late. He slams on the gas and Thomas bounces to the floor whimpering.

Lavender will be DAMNED if she lets Mateo get away with this. She should have known. She shakes her head angrily and steps on the gas, recounting what happened.

She had woken up to the sound of a door slamming. She thought at first that Thomas had somehow gotten untied and was trying to escape again, so she checked the basement. It was empty of course, but she only realized that something wasn't right when she heard a car engine. Mateo's car engine.

Lavender tried reach him before he left with Thomas, but the pickup truck was already gone, with only a trail of dust left behind. And when she ran back into the house to get her car keys, they were gone. Mateo took them. She had to find the spare keys before going after him, which killed more time than she could afford. She had no idea if she would be too late, but she had to try.

If she guessed correctly, Mateo would be going back to his main hideout. He always goes there before stashing his victims in some remote place. Thankfully, the years of partnership with the fucker paid off. She catches up to him when he's almost home. But instead of taking a right, Mateo's truck takes a left and starts going up a narrow trail. What the fuck was he doing? She turns and follows him in her little white car but she can't see his lights anymore. She steps on the gas, trying to catch up, almost starting to panic now, thinking that she's lost him. But then she hears Mateo's engine rev from behind her, and-

CRASH.

Now that Lavender was taken care of, Mateo can get the fuck outta there. Thomas was still crying. Maybe he scared him a little when he hit Lavender's car. He shushes the boy and drives back down the trail. He's almost home free. All he has to is grab Nico and then he can disappear. He's got plenty of other safehouses to retreat to.
