Description
Mission complete, on the way home, one last buzz over the field before landing.Duxford, England. 9 Spitfires over my head, I managed to capture this wave of 4 buzzing straight over the field while the other line up to land.
I am dead inline with the runway, damn they were low! The breeze from a mixture of Merlin and Griffon engines is really something!
I left the hedge in the shot to give you an idea of the height they were at.

This is a brilliant picture, it captures te majesty of the spitfires, but also the playfulness of the young pilots who would have flown them during the war. It's the way that the three of them on the right are not formated but instead loosely following one another while looking as through they are swooping and zooming about. You can imagine the young pilots after a hard flight during the battle of britain racing one another and generally mucking about on their way back. You often see photographs and paintings that caputre the majesty and iconicness of the spitfire and other historic fighters, but I don't think it's very often you see an image that really gives something of the joy that it must be to actually pilot one. Everything, the low light, low altitude - it must have been an incredible experience, even just flying them at Duxford, 4 years ago. This is a really great picture and deserved its DD.

Amazing capture Just wondering, how did you get right to the end of Duxfords runway? I live near there, but Ive never been unable to get that close, and only thought so if you were like, one of the stewards there??
