Added 9/17/12Alright, so I saw this concept art on a wiki for HTTYD, and it was a potential design for Toothless. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the final design for the Night Furies, but this is a pretty awesome looking critter.

awesome, could be the film version of the toxic nightshade dragon from the books. (don't ask me why, it's just whenever i see this concept the words toxic nightshade)

I saw the same concept, it's wicked. You captured it well.
Have to agree with not going with this as the final version, it can still pull many of the expressions but, not to the level as the final Night Fury design Toothless was given. This concept could work for a different species in my opinion.

Film!Toothless is admirably versatile of expression, though of course the mainstream plays his cuddly side to the hilt. This handsome brute, on the other hand, retains a certain streamlined elegance with its thick neck, robust but aerodynamic skull & nifty rudder; the latter may not be quite so elaborate as a Canon!Night Fury's arrangement, but actually seems quite functional by draconic standards. Finally, I'm seriously digging that ship's bow of an underbite. Finding common ground with a creature this formidable-looking would be an impressive feat of 'trainage' indeed.

I think that's mostly the reason I'm glad they didn't use this design for the movie-the one they did use has a much more expressive face. Even if this one does look pretty awesome, it doesn't have the openness of expression. I would like it if they DID use this as a different dragon, though-it's just too neat a design to simply let lie on the cutting room floor.

Crazy thought: given this sucker's heavyweight neck musculature, perhaps scrawnier breeds of dragon figure on its menu in a big way. Big enough, say, to give wet-under-the-helmet Viking kids (and of course their mounts) a good sharp shock-not to mention one or two intense episodes.

I think they probably wouldn't have changed much, since as it is Toothless is really, really different from the other dragons. Still, we might have gotten more dinosaur shaped ones like this, which would have been cool.

There will be a new dragon based on a dinosaur! Its called the Speed Stinger. A Sharp Class Dragon and the first flightless dragon of the series.

Well to be fair alot of the dragons are really different from each other, most hardly share body types as it is lol.
Have you been able to catch the new series yet? I've been watching it on Youtube myself.

I prefer the final design of the Night Fury mainly because it's cuter, but this is still awesome, I would like to see this animated, but we probably never will, but maybe they'll use the design for another dragon.
