whoo, wonderful colours!
Le gasp at the white pencil D=

Sometimes you can also blend with an eraser, just rub very lightly on an area with a decent amount of colouring
(it doesn't work on lightly coloured places)

Thanks! This tutorial is a bit old, nowadays blending usually involves my fingers more than anything, but an eraser is a good idea too!

you're very welcome!
I was searching for tutorials for Derwent colorsoft pencils, and this one came up as well.
I haven't used mine much, bacause they're pretty hard to blend.
And I was wondering what's the best way to use them =B
(like mix with other pencils etc)

I find derwent colorsofts good for large blended areas (like skies) but not so good for detailed areas because the leads are thick. To blend, I just layer on tons of different color, and press harder with each layer. It's best for the first layers to be lighter colors, or colors that aren't as important. So for grass, I would start with bright greens and browns, maybe yellows, and add the darker greens after. That way the color you see is dark green, but it has a yellowy or brown undertone. You can use a white pencil or a prismacolor colorless blender, or your finger, to sort of smudge the colors together. For detailing, I like using faber castell polychromos, but colorsofts work, you just have to sharpen them a lot

This is really great, I learnt alot from this tutorial. Thank you for doing it. May I just ask: Is it better to blend with a more blunter rounder-edged pencil. Or a sharp pointy pencil?
You did a great job. Thank you

Glad you enjoyed it! I like using sharper pencils better, and especially for detail and grass it helps.

You're welcome. I thought it would be easier if your blending so much with white pencil, It would probably break. Anyway thank you.

wow we draw and color much the same way only i use a colorless blender instead of white. you should tray that sometime ull find that it washes out much less and u can get it smoother with less pressure then the white

scenceable In reply to solsticecat220 [2009-06-20 04:45:04 +0000 UTC]

I have a colorless blender that I use sometimes. I like it for shading dark colors, like blacks, and places where I want to keep the detail, but I like the white for horse's bodies and things like that

solsticecat220 In reply to scenceable [2009-06-20 04:48:45 +0000 UTC]

yeah u have a point and it is much easier for dark colors. i sometimes even blend using a lighter shade of the main color like say i was blending medium and dark blue, i would use light blue and it would give pretty much the same effect but with more hues

scenceable In reply to solsticecat220 [2009-06-20 04:54:27 +0000 UTC]

Yep, sometimes I use light blue, light yellow, or light tan for blending as well. It works pretty well!

thanks! I've changed my style a bit now. It's easier to do separate bakes, one for the head and neck, one for the body, one for the front legs and shoulders, and one for the back legs and tail. That way I can finish 2 legs at once

lol Any idea how to make a nice gold palomino with colored pencils? I have roseart and crayola, not sure if you work with those but I cant find the right color/s :S

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scenceable In reply to kury2014 [2009-06-11 02:52:09 +0000 UTC]

I don't use those pencils. If I have a light tan or chestnt color then I use those. You could blend yellow with brown too I suppose

kury2014 In reply to scenceable [2009-06-11 03:05:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Ive tried everything I can think of, brown with a darker yellow with some tan in it, golden yellow with tan, plain tan, Ive found some I like but its not exactly what Im looking for, Ive been asking around though

One question?
1. I use Prismacolors... are those okay?
and 2. With the blurring with the white, what do you consider details?
3. How many pencils did you use in the whole thing, and what kind?

Sorry, that was actually 3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scenceable In reply to Leedlpuff [2009-02-18 02:32:02 +0000 UTC]

yeah prismas are fine, most people use them. I find they break a lot though, but they're pretty awesome.

what do you mean? I usually blend carefully with a fine sharpened tip in detailed areas, or press hard with the colors I use instead of using white.

at least 3 shades of each color, plus black and white and light yellow. so 3 or 4 different blues, 3 different reds, etc. I used polychromos for this one with prismacolors for the blending (white and yellow) but now I also use derwent colorsoft for a lot of background and grass coloring, since they blend better.

hope that answered your questions

Leedlpuff In reply to scenceable [2009-02-18 02:35:11 +0000 UTC]

Ok, I just got them on Sunday, and I am just getting used to them...

I mean, you said, "I don't use the white in the detailed areas because the blending kills the values." no?

Ok. I have a 36 pack of Prismacolor Premiums so... I might have enough..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scenceable In reply to Leedlpuff [2009-02-18 02:37:47 +0000 UTC]

well the white tends to wash out the values everywhere, so you have to go back over them with the colors (like add grey back in for shadows) and in detailed areas like on the horse's face, you would have to shade the colors over again. I hope that makes sense
