Description It's for a childrens book. A personal project I'm doing together with my mum. I'm so excited cause it's my first drawing project where I'm not just drawing for myself...

It needs to look nice for the book of course so I would appreciate critique a lot!!

I really love this piece, much like two versions of a previous piece of yours that I critiqued. As such, you probably already know that I am from a.deviantart.net/avatars/p/r/p… " alt=" " title="ProjectComment" />ProjectComment This seems like a complicated piece, and yet you made it look nice and really fitting for a children's book. The style is also really nice and doesn't really clash. I feel like the lighting does seem a bit off, since it seems like the main source of light is the moon reflecting sunlight into the barn from that hole in the wall. With the way it looks like it should shine the light in the barn, you seem to make the hay and walls a little too shiny. I understand that this decision does help with visibility but it still seems a bit awkward unless the interior walls were painted with a special kind of paint or something. Also, the pose taken by the human seems a bit awkward, especially considering the placement of one of his arms. Still, I love what you did here overall. The varied animals in particular are a rather nice touch, and the night setting here seems so calm and serene. Overall, this is an excellent piece!

Hello and thank you so much for critiquing a piece once again <3.Β

Yes it's a bit difficult to make the painting not too dark without everything being a bit to shiny for the small light source...

Yes the poses and proportions *sigh* it was again my greatest struggle . Just need to keep on pracitising .

Your critique helped me a lot <3

You're very welcome. And I say these points knowing full well that you still do a better job with them than I do. I'd love to see what work you do in the future.

I love how the colors reflect everything, from the goat(?), to her/his clothes, the small mouse, the cobweb, it's beautiful.
Now, I am by NO means an expert or even a pinch of an artsitl, WHATSOEVER!!

This is just teh opinion of a (soon to be) 16 yr old girl.
Is it a boy or girl?
Was the human and goat, mouse, everything supposed to look so small compared to the giant stack of hay?
Also, what is it the human is holding?
Was the first stack of hay supposed to be like, around the corner kinda thing? Where it's bigger and closer to the screen to make it look as if you are peering PAST it? If so, then The pitch for should probably be a bit bigger.

THEN AGAIN IM NOT AN ARTIST AT ALL, WHATSOEVER!!!

But this was supppper realistic though!
Great job! ^.^

Hello Emma,

thank you a lot for the comment and for the helpful advices. You actually really helped me a lot with what you are saying <3.Β

the protagonist on the painting is actually a older woman or grandma but it was quite difficult to make her look old...

I didn't want to zoom into the painting too much. But you made me think of that the giant heap of hay might be a bit distracting and should actually not be the focus of the painting...

The grandma is holding a torch light

I'm not sure what the hay is supposed to look like just a large heap but not high and more scattered I guess... I don't know

I'll try to overwork it maybe .Β  Its very interesting to hear a diffrent perspective to see things you didn't see before .Β Β

This is the first time anyone has ever responded to any of my "critique"sΒ
But i'm really, reallyΒ glad that I helped you! And i just didn't realize what she was holding since i've never seen one before,
actually i kinda thought that it was a blush apply-er thingy from a make up kit. Idk why.
And I was just curious cuz I thought 'okay either this person is like mega small or this barn and hay is really big-'
thenΒ the thought of the whole "Borrower" thing hit me and I was like, "oh that's cool!"

But I'm really happy that I helped you!
Even though im just a "kid"

I just like to make other people happy-
and the fact that i made you happy makes me happy.

I can't believe I'm the first one to response. I was really happy to read your comment and feel honoured you took the time . It's the least thing to do to respond in my opinion. At least when there are not too many comments to respond to . I think your critique is very valuable and it's actually cool to get the view from people of all kinds of age . Especially because this illustration is for a kids book it's even more important what younger people think about it .Β

Have a nice day <3

Don't worry about the star rating, I think its a poor way to review a piece! At the end of the day your building up and learning and it's a nice concept. The thing that draws me is the atmosphere, it's lonely but there's a lot of creatures. (BTW love the little stones, good detail), but I will start of with shading, as good as it is, sometimes trying to add fuzzy shading on everything doesn't work, sometimes block colour makes other detail pop! you want to see the image as just shapes, the girl is a main shape that you want to make stick out! structures like the building should feel ridged so don't be scared of selecting a shape e.g. the beams and just solid filling them in with one colour, crisp edges is important for any image, and you want some strong edges between objects rather than fading shades, defining a shadow can be more valuable than the characters details, after all her details should be defined by shadow!

The last point I'll make is with colour, something that is so valuable is post fx, even on a static image, add a mask and work the colours in interesting ways, build so decent saturation and you see things come alive.

hope you find the advice useful! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Hello,

I feel so honoured you have critiqued on my piece <3. Interesting advice and I think you are right . I was also not so satisfied with the woman not standing out enough. I would llike to make the lighting less fuzzy and the structures more crisp, but I struggled a bit in this piece .Β

good point with the the mask. I actually played around with colours and the gradient filter quite a while. I guess I just need a bit more practise with it to get everything out of the picture

thanks your critique helpes me a lot <3

Very curious!

This is quite a dreamy and original piece of art work, and I do appreciate such a unique, visionary style. The colors are well-picked, conveying serenity and calm; the way the barn is illuminated is quite wonderful, but what I love the most has to be the cobwebs, the goat, the rake, the mouse, the owl, the moon, and the pebbles on the ground of the barn. Those were all well done in terms of shading, detail, and impact.

I'm not entirely too keen with the woman and the hay around her. The hay feels a bit out of place; perhaps, the shading could be done more carefully and less line-y, like groomed fur, almost. It's a little odd compared to the rest of the image, and I feel like the proportions of the woman are a bit off. If you look closely, one foot is not the same shape as the other, and her shoulders are too small in relation to the rest of the body according to anatomy. The hand was done quite well though, so I commend you on that.

Overall, the art piece is really good, and you don't have to listen to my critique if this was the style you're going for, and the woman was supposed to have that body shape. So, keep up the good work! You're a great artist, and I feel honored to critique this for you!

Hello,

Thanks a lot for critiquing the piece. I'm happy to hear the animals turned out nice .

Drawing peoples proportions correctly is not something I'm a master at. Still trying to figure it out so thank you for the tip with the shoulders and the feet. I'll try and correct it or practise it more .

Oh I have still lots to learn but thanks <3 that's very nice of you. And I feel so so honoured you have spend time on commenting

wow, that is a fantastic image. there is a misty blue tinge to this and it really is serene with a lot of blue in the nighttime sky. there is a child sleeping and a goat and a small mouse in there too. there is a beautiful moon in there and it all shines like a perfect night at 1:00 am. very pretty atmosphere. this is a real beautiful piece that was a real children's story and it feels like a magical experience. you can feel the tenderness of it all and the way it illuminates was lovely. this is the pic of the hour.
