Poor Constellation, one of the Redshirt Subclass of Constitution Class starships.
Perhaps the one misstep when they remastered the original series, this episode especially, is they did not take the opportunity to show any battle damage, however superficial, to the exterior of the Enterprise.
The Doomsday Machine ripped the Constellation apart, yet in spite of her taking at least one direct blast, and several more potentially lesser glancing blows, the Enterprise didnβt even chip her paint; too bad every ship in the fleet canβt be equipped with such potent plot armor.

I once read a very interesting commentary piece which explained how Decker was meant to be an allegory to what Kirk himself would likely suffer in the same situation; when replaying his log entries his voice is calm, collected, commanding. He loses the ship he loves, makes a decision which dooms his entire crew, itβs easy to see how the simile would be apt.
