hey man, really love this style, been using it for a while. is there any way for me to change the colours such as border, active border, background? thanks in advance

You would have to get your hands on a copy of the Windows Style Builder that supports Windows 8 and change the bitmap images inside the visual style.

It apparently does, as this whole visual style is made with it.

I suspect I will have an update out this week or early next week. I just need to resize and merge some new Scopics icons and then I'll focus on my visual style.

I'll try to get a virtual machine up and running with 8.1 as testing environment and go from there.

I've installed this previously and I want to update to the latest version. However when I do, the login screen won't show up. I think it's because of the registry hack you had earlier to keep portions black. Any idea on how I can revert that back seeing as how I don't have the file anymore?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scope10 In reply to jman1080p [2014-07-20 15:42:45 +0000 UTC]

You mean you get a black screen on boot after the windows 8 loading screen? That is because of windows updates breaking stuff of the visual style patch.

The registry hack itself is still included in the download together with an undo file to restore to default. I doubt the registry hack is the problem though.

You can always use system restore to fix it by either booting into safe mode or using a repair disc. You can also try and let windows fix itself by letting it not boot correctly 3-5 times.

Alright, so my best bet in updating is just to let windows restart itself a couple of times and the login screen should start up fine? or are the updates breaking the themes that badly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scope10 In reply to jman1080p [2014-07-20 21:52:13 +0000 UTC]

That could fix it sometimes yeah. Sometimes is just takes a long time before it comes up. It's hard to diagnose the exact problem.

If everything fails I recommend getting a recovery or install disc or usb of windows 8 and using a system restore to an earlier point in time.

Well, you can blame Microsoft for breaking themes with every update.

I don't really have an ETA, but I will try to get back to working on my theme soon hopefully. I'm currently having some trouble with the style builder, so I will need to get that fixed first.

That's a problem that was caused by the update 1 of Windows 8.1. I still need to work on the fix and make it so it doesn't mess with the current right click menu on the desktop.

Scope10 In reply to sereft [2014-07-14 20:46:59 +0000 UTC]

Only way I know is through changing the shellstyle.dll in the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Penumbra 8 (W)\Shell\NormalColor folder.

Just follow this tutorial www.askvg.com/how-to-make-fold… . You don't need to edit the shellstyle in SysWOW64 & system32 folders since you're using a third party theme.

Figured it out... Idk why I didn't try the obvious thing before asking.
I think I may have a bug though, a lot of the textures that I'd assume are supposed to be black/grey, are white.
Like image shown. Is it because I haven't installed ONE?

Scope10 In reply to PeanutAssery [2014-07-08 14:03:47 +0000 UTC]

No, it's not because you don't have ONE. The white background is part of the bitmap number 632 & 633 found in Shell32.dll in system32 folder. This cannot be easily changed, it's possible, but It's not possible to change it with only the theme file. I personally don't recommend changing it since it can cause system instability when done wrong.

I hope you incorporate some of Grey's updates, they seem to be able to make some extra things dark thanks to OldNewExplorer.

Very nice theme. Could you please fix this for the latest Win 8.1 Update? The context menus on the start menu are missing and I have some white areas in the Control Panel. Also, could you maybe make a version that only uses Segoe UI? I like to have a consistent interface

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scope10 In reply to RandomUsernamexD [2014-04-26 21:10:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm not yet aware with the problems with the latest 8.1 update. I'll look into it and see if I can fix it.
Some of the elements in Windows can not be changed by a visual style which is why you'll still see some white parts. To change those you need to fiddle with system .dll files which I do not recommend because it can cause your system to become unstable.
Changing fonts is really easy and can be done yourself. Just follow this tutorial: virtualcustoms.net/showthread.…

RandomUsernamexD In reply to Scope10 [2014-04-27 13:39:20 +0000 UTC]

I tried that, but it doesn't change all of the fonts... Even when I apply another theme and restart, it's still there.

Please do not do that!

Good clean simple theme. Glad there are more choices of dark 8 themes now.

I do however find windows that are overlapping look merged together.

And this keeps randomly happening--blue:

Scope10 In reply to Pafter [2014-03-23 19:00:31 +0000 UTC]

The windows overlapping too much should be fixed in the next update.
I have no idea what that blue thing is.
The taskbar icon notification flashes were pretty much just a test to see if I could get them working. I'll try to make them more noticeable in the next update.

Brilliant.

If you didn't get it...I mean it can be a a tiny bit hard to differentiate windows. But changing would probably change the theme too much so don't worry.

I'd like to use some alternative window buttons (minimize, maximize, and close), could you walk me through doing this? I looked through all 500+ images in the "IMAGE" folder and couldn't find any of the three buttons you used.

Thanks.

Scope10 In reply to YourCamelIsFat [2014-03-22 13:07:15 +0000 UTC]

Not sure what "IMAGE" folder you're talking about, but the way to change those buttons are by using the Windows Style Builder (WSB) and changing the glyphs under Windows & Caption Buttons > Basic > Controls > Captions > Windows.

Scope10 In reply to YourCamelIsFat [2014-03-21 12:12:24 +0000 UTC]

Most of the problems you mention are because of the styles that are hard coded into the program itself, so those styles can not be changed by a visual style.

The white parts of the Control Panel (2nd link) is part of of Shell32.dll in the System32 folder. This can be changed, but I don't recommend changing it because it can make your system unstable when you try to do it.

Wow.. Penumbra 8 W is simply beautiful. I've been searching for a dark theme, that does not alter the inside of app workspaces, and yours seems to be the only one around.

If you ever do a bit of designing or you ever try to format a document for printing, you will know that it is best to leave the actual workspaces alone and concentrate on the surroundings.

Unfortunately it seems to render my system unstable. I suspect it is because my shell32.dll version is 6.3.9600.17474, but the shellstyle.dll included in the theme (and in Gray2014) is only 6.2.xxxx.xxxx.

Are there any chances for an update? I would love to use your theme!

Thanks none the less

Scope10 In reply to papagoejoe [2014-02-12 21:17:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if that is the problem. If it is, maybe you can use the shellstyle.dll from a newer visual style and see if that works.

What exactly is causing your system to render unstable? I've had my fair share of problems creating this visual style so I know the solution to a thing or two.

As far as updates go, I'm not sure how to update to said verrsion.

papagoejoe In reply to Scope10 [2014-02-13 07:40:40 +0000 UTC]

Well File Explorer takes a while to load after boot (longer than other with themes) and it glitches sometimes, and explorer.exe often crashes and needs to restart.

I've had problem with multiple monitors as well, like the secondary monitor going to sleep even though there was activity on the screen.

The monitor problem might have been caused by a bad cable, but I didn't have any problems after I switched themes.

Currently I use this theme:
xxinightxx.deviantart.com/art/…

It has shelstyle.dll 6.3.9600.16384, and I do not seem to have stability problems when I use it. Can I just copy the shellstyle.dll from that into your theme? I thought shellstylle.dll was theme specific since it had to be included.

FYI I have the same stability problems with Abbismo, Gray and other themes I've tried that changes the File Explorer background and all have had shellstyle.dll 6.2.xxx.xxxxx.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scope10 In reply to papagoejoe [2014-02-13 15:53:24 +0000 UTC]

That seems odd. I've never had such problems before in Windows 8 or 8.1.

The multiple monitor problem doesn't have anything to do with the theme itself. I've been running a dual monitor setup for a long time and never had such problems.

I'm not sure if it will affect the theme if you replace the shellstyle.dll file, but I think it would. You can always try though. Just be sure to back up your stuff when messing with system files.

The only solution I can think of on my side is using the latest version of Windows Style Builder, but I don't have the latest version and I don't think I can acquire it anytime soon. I'll be on the lookout for it though.
