Description This is my entry for 's latest concept contest.
This time around, the magic phrase is "system connected".
I figured most people would go for a cyberpunk or futuristic style piece; so being me, I went in the total opposite direction- dieselpunk.
Did this piece in Gimp 2.6.6, took about 12 hours from first loose brainstorming to the final image.
You can see the WIP shots I took and some details on her arm-mounted keypad here:

In the world in which this rogue programmer lives, revolutionary miniaturized vacuum tubes have lead to the development of advanced computers decades ahead of schedule. Computers fitting in a single room able to process megabytes of data are now becoming commonplace! This has also lead to the rise of "personal computation": those able to afford it, can purchase remote access terminals that allow one to access a portion of a computer's vast power from the comfort of one's own home via two-way radio! The controllers of these "mainframes", however, more and more seek to control the flow of data, and access to it. There is a growing underground, however, who seek to break the hold these infobrokers have on the data-net. Armed with homemade microcomputers, pirate radio networks, and their own wits, these "hackers" are planting the seeds of a computer revolution of their own...one "System Connected..." at a time.

Are the shadows in this a mix of actually darker color, or a normal color that you drop the light it shines with? (I really dont know, and wondering.)

Its a bit of both, actually.
I laid down the normal color,
Then put a semi-transparent layer of dark over that to make it the darkness level I wanted the shadows to be.
Then I painted semi-transparent yellow and orange over this to create the highlights.
I also painted in a little bit of blue into the shadows on the figure to make it stand out from the background.
