Description Finished (kinda) for Tekkoshocon! He actually still needs the fluff spikes around his neck, and he will get those in time for Otakon.

I didn't take this photo, it's one we bought from the photo booth at Tekko.

Great costume. What materials did you use for the head piece?

Thanks! The short version: Upholstery foam, faux fur, hotglue, sealed buckram (for the eyes) and lots of hand sewing.

interesting. I saw that it also has a moving jaw. Can i use plaster gauze to make it and what is the best material to articulate the jaw?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to H-StallionWolf [2013-04-18 19:45:36 +0000 UTC]

Plaster gauze will probably not work very well, just judging from my own experience from using it. This mask's lower jaw is actually just foam and uses elastic to hold it on and articulate with the costumers own jaw.

Doesn't that sound uncomfortable?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to H-StallionWolf [2013-04-18 20:59:40 +0000 UTC]

No? He says it's really comfortable, and it's the done the same on my Umbreon, which I think it very comfortable. I suppose it would be uncomfortable if the elastic was too tight, but that would be an err on the maker's part.

So it's like two pieces of the mask separated. Interesting

how long did it take you to make it? and how much did it cost for the materials?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to BeadedDragon600 [2011-12-23 00:23:42 +0000 UTC]

When all is said and done materials were probably between $400 and $500. It took about a month to complete.

was it easy?

ScratchKitty In reply to BeadedDragon600 [2011-12-24 05:08:16 +0000 UTC]

For me it wasn't super difficult, but I have been sewing for years. For someone without that skillset, it could prove to be more difficult.

aww man! i really have to learn how to sew,so i can start costume making as my hobby!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to BeadedDragon600 [2011-12-25 08:04:43 +0000 UTC]

Good luck! Sewing fur can be both easier and more difficult than normal sewing. Easier because fur is pretty forgiving as far as lumpy or crooked seams go. (and the longer it is the more it will generally hide) But it's also harder because most fur does not have a whole lot of stretch to it, so an ill-fitting suit can be really uncomfortable!

My suggestion to try it out would be to start with paw gloves. They're pretty easy and can give you a better idea about how to handle the fur.

(sorry for the REALLY LATE comment!) where do you get the materials?could you send me a link?

Well as much as I'd love to just give links, you really need to search around. Foam I bought locally. The fur I got from CR's Crafts ( [link] ). Other things I got here and there as I was able to find them.

i never thought of it that. thanks! so i should make a partial-suit first?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to BeadedDragon600 [2011-12-28 01:25:38 +0000 UTC]

I would say just start small. The head is the hardest part really moreso for carving and shaping. The fur isn't too difficult to pick up with a little practice, but shaping heads is something that takes a lot of trial and error, which means a LOT of practice. And don't be discouraged if your first doesn't come out spectacular. It's all part of the learning process

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BeadedDragon600 In reply to ScratchKitty [2011-12-28 02:00:16 +0000 UTC]

how much would a partial suit cost to make?(materials and tools)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to BeadedDragon600 [2011-12-28 18:40:40 +0000 UTC]

Depends. If you can find the fur and foam on sale, you can lower the cost down a bit; they are generally the most expensive materials. If you use cheap crappy fur it'll be cheaper still. But crappy fur used in any significant amount will usually make even good work look terrible.

I think the way prices are now, you could make a partial yourself for between $200 and $400, depending on what tools you have and don't have that you prefer to work with.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BeadedDragon600 In reply to ScratchKitty [2011-12-29 04:31:23 +0000 UTC]

what store or online shop do you trust to buy materials at?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to BeadedDragon600 [2011-12-30 22:58:45 +0000 UTC]

It really depends on what you're looking for. I always shop around for the best prices I can get. Foam I usually get in person rather than ordering.

For faux fur I have several places I check:
CR's Crafts [link]
I'm Stuffed Furs [link]
Interior Mall [link]
Fabric.com [link]
and Distinctive Fabrics [link]

Sometimes I can get lucky and find decent faux fur locally, but it's unusual.

For synthetic hair I go to Doctored Locks [link]

Most craft stores will carry the tools and smaller materials (like thread, hotglue and the like) you might need, but again it depends on what you're looking for. Since there are so many ways to do things, there are a lot of differing tools and materials depending on what you decide to do.

Yeah Philly is too far for me to add to my list. I'm doing(well one is done) 4 cons this year. Two I am traveling for (Otakon and Dragon*Con), and two are here in Pittsburgh (Tekkoshocon and Anthrocon). Until I start making some money, traveling for two cons is pretty much my limit. haha

Though I do hope to go back to AnimeNEXT someday and hope for a better experience from it. lol

Quick question: what are the hand-spikes made of? :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to Plaid-pichu [2010-06-04 01:43:48 +0000 UTC]

They're actually carved foam covered with muslin, then coated with plasti dip.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Plaid-pichu In reply to ScratchKitty [2010-06-05 21:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Really? Interesting, I might try that! Thanks so much!
Also, after the spikes are coated in Muslin and plasti dip, does the foam become hard or does it retain a foamy structure?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to Plaid-pichu [2010-06-06 00:15:44 +0000 UTC]

It's a bit stiffer, but it can still squish a bit. the smoother you can get the muslin to lay, the less plastidip you need.. I layered it on till the lines from the muslin disappeared. Haha.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Plaid-pichu In reply to ScratchKitty [2010-06-06 07:09:33 +0000 UTC]

Really? I've never used either before, what do you mean by layering? so that it doesn't look like cloth anymore on the finished product? Or is Muslin not that clothy

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to Plaid-pichu [2010-06-06 18:44:23 +0000 UTC]

Muslin is a thin cloth. The only reason it's in there is to keep the plasti dip from just soaking into the foam. The plasti dip will still soak into the muslin and foam a little, so you have to use a few layers to make it smooth. Plasti dip is a rubbery-plastic substance that is commonly used to coat the grip on tools. You can find it in both a dip and a spray. For Lucario here, I used a black dip (I couldn't find it in white locally, and didn't have time to order it) and then once it was smooth, I used white (plasti dip) spray to coat it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Plaid-pichu In reply to ScratchKitty [2010-06-07 03:39:50 +0000 UTC]

Really? Thank you so much for this detail in how to make it! So the dip is more important than the spray, and you dont need spray if the dip is white, right?
Okay one more question: Where could you buy these supplies? (muslin and plasti dip) Im guessing you get the dip from a hardware store, right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to Plaid-pichu [2010-06-07 08:37:09 +0000 UTC]

right, if you can find the dip in white, the spray isn't needed. You can get plasti dip at hardware stores usually.. but most don't seem to carry anything but black. But you can order direct from Performix: [link]

Muslin is just a cheap thin fabric. You should be able to find it anywhere that sells cloth and sewing supplies.

And no problem I like to share the joys of costume making!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Plaid-pichu In reply to ScratchKitty [2010-06-08 01:00:35 +0000 UTC]

oh, okay!
and then the muslin you just wrap around the foam with a bit of glue?
Thank you so so much~~! you've been a great help, I was having trouble thinking of a way to add spikes to my paws for my Lucario suit that wouldn't drag the hands down!
Last time I used sculpty and that wasn't too smart. <_<;;;
And yours is soo awesome! 8DD
You've very helpful! X3 Thanks again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScratchKitty In reply to Plaid-pichu [2010-06-08 07:50:32 +0000 UTC]

I used Super77, which is a spray glue to put the muslin on. Just remember to let some of the muslin extend down to cover the base. I glued the spikes on, then used the muslin overhang to sew it too, so it was more secure!

And no problem! I love to help
