How much you need really depends on your size and how much padding you are doing, and how many mistakes you think you might make. Β I think I got 4 yards of the black and only a yard of the yellow, but I had plenty left over for other things! Β For reference, I am under 5 feet tall and only about 110lbs. Β The leftover yellow from Bree was given to a friend who was able to make a Jolteon partial. Β Really, I needed only about 1/4 yard for Bree.
Good luck with your suit!

Do you mind telling me what type of fur you used and where you got it? I recently made a leafeon fursuit, and the fur was terrible! It was extremely stiff and easily fell apart... any general points in the right direction would help(:

I used what is commonly referred to as "DF" fur, or "Promo Shag". It's very soft and high quality, though it needs a lot of brushing to keep it that way.
It can be ordered online from several places, here are a few:
[link] It's the Solid long hair fur. The sparkle from them is also good, and a little longer.

Beware though, shaving this stuff can be a real chore!

Bree is so cute!
I'm attempting an umbreon fursuit right now as well and hope it turns out every bit as good as yours.

Thanks! It's coming along nicely actually, but I only finished it partially for Halloween this year.
I'm actually really stuck on making the bodysuit part. I finished the feet, head, and tail though.

Yeah, body suits can be a little tricky to start, but i found once you know what you're doing they're probably the easiest part of the costume
Have you made a duct tape dummy? They're super helpful for making the body pattern!

Well, I entirely covered myself in duct tape and cut it off for a pattern, but it didn't work when I tried it with the test fabric, so I did it again and am going to ask my aunt (a seamstress) for help with where to cut it. Perhaps this is a crazy way to do it? How did you make yours?

I made the dummy then used a basic bodysuit pattern from McCalls I think and cut that from musin. If you have padding, put that on the bodysuit, then pin the muslin pattern on the dummy. it should be really baggy, so then you just need to pin it closer into the dummy until it's more form fitting. Trim the pattern down, and unpin, that will give you a new pattern.
That's how I did Umbron. With Lucario, the padding was more complext, so I made an all new pattern by covering half of the dummy with trash bags, and cheap masking tape. Then I cut that for the pattern.
I never cut the dummy, I find it useful to make sure the pattern is going to fit once it's cut. Also helpful if you can't try it on, say if you were making it for someone else.

Interesting.
I do have padding, but only in the legs because I was trying to make it not too complex for my first attempt at a fursuit.
I think I could turn my duct tape into a duct tape dummy, except that I had taped it over the padding in the legs, but that shouldn't matter too much for this pattern at least and could probably be modified in the future.
I guess I just need to hunt down this McCalls pattern now.
Thank you for your help!

this suit is VERY pretty....
sorry to bug, but may i ask how the eyes were made?....

ScratchKitty In reply to XfearlessXfireX [2010-09-19 05:59:33 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
The eyes are made entirely of painted buckram. Since this suit is often used without a handler, I wanted as near complete range of vision as I could get. I have to be able to spot glompers before they tackle me

ahhhh! makes sense~

If you've seen the Lucario I did, he has the same style of eyes and even better vision than Umbreon. Just be sure to make them nice and large! The buckram also helps vent heat so wearing the mask isn't as bad
