Description: The cactus hoppers are an odd genus of lizards that behaves similarly to tree frogs. Many species of amphibians cannot survive in this harsh dry environment, so lizards have evolved to take their niche. These lizards are descended from a species of horned lizards, which were small reptiles that lived in the desert ages ago. These animals were able to survive the mass extinction because they were quite tiny and able to adapt to the new environments.
The cactus hoppers are mostly light-brown in color, with some species having spots or stripes. They have spiny tough scales, used to defend against predators and prey. The spines are also used as a mating display, combined with them puffing up. The legs of these lizards allow them to jump between the large cacti and away from predators. Their tongues make it easier to eat the venomous insects of the desert.
One unique behavior of these reptiles is the jumping between the giant cacti of the desert. These lizards can jump long distances, making them able to travel the desert. They are pretty quite common and easy to see in the vast desert. These reptiles can also their jumping ability to mates. Males will send out a loud cry into the nights, and females will usually come to loudest males.
