Description: The stoat opossum is a small weasel-like opossum that fills a similar niche to that of weasels and other small carnivores. These marsupials have convergently evolved with the stoat (Mustela erminea), which lived 40 million years ago, in the terms of color and behavior. Even though there are mustelids on the South American continent, most of them have evolved to be the apex predators of their environment. This left niches open to other animals, which allowed the opossums to take the niche of a small carnivore.
The stoat opossum is orangish-brown and white with black fur on the tip of its tail. The slender body of the opossum allows it to fit into the burrows of small animals, which makes it easier to hunt down prey. Its sense of smell is extremely great, able to smell a scent from a kilometer away. The opossum’s teeth are sharp making them able to cut into the meat of small herbivores. Unlike the stoat, the fur of the opossum is quite thin to helps it stay cool during the warmer months.
The behavior of the stoat opossum is unique when it comes to its hunting behavior, at least when it comes to marsupials. The opossum will usually sniff in the air, waiting to get a whiff of a small animal. Once the opossum smells its prey, it will head towards it. After the opossum finds its prey, it will start to chase the prey animals. If the prey animal lives in burrows, it will then be chased into this burrow by the opossum. The opossum can now corner the prey animal and kill it, allowing to eat.
