Description: The capybuffalo is a species of large rodent, actually one of the largest in history, that is descended from the capybara. This animal was the rodent that lived 40 million years ago, which was the largest rodent at that time. Because of a lack of large herbivores, these large rodents were able to evolve into these niches. They have kept their herd behavior and have developed larger herds of about 50 to 70 individuals. However, they can get up to 300 or 500 when migrating.
Β Β The capybuffalo has brown fur with dark brown shown on the feet and nose of the rodent. Like all rodents, its teeth are constantly growing and need to be used all the time. Capybuffalos can be seen chewing on trees, hard plants, and other things. Although it is not a hoofed mammal, the rodent developed some hoof-like feet, converging with near all hoofed mammals. The bulky body of the capybuffalo helps these rodents tank through attacks from predators.
One of the most interesting things about the capybuffalo is that they have complex herd behavior that is similar to the ancient bison and buffalos. Usually, a group of capybuffalos can have ten or twelve male capybuffalos in a group. However, there is only one alpha male in a group of capybuffalo, and they control the rest of the group. During the dry season, the males will fight to claim the top spot of the herd. The male capybuffalos will brawl by using their front legs, trying to push their opponent back far. The stronger male will win and become the alpha male of the group.
