Description Here is one of the Joker cards for the Endangered Ark card deck ( [link] ). He's in your outback, eating your numbats.

Taking second place to feral house cats, the red fox is one of Australia's most problematic invasive predator. They were originally brought over in 1855 from Europe for the purpose of recreational hunting. Since then, their numbers have exploded, estimated around 7 million animals. They are responsible for the decline of many small marsupials, including the numbat. The fox is a very adaptable, elusive and prolific animal, and as such, is nearly impossible to contain or control. It continues to decimate populations of native species and there is no foreseeable solution.

As much as I love the creatures. Its terrible to know that it's because of us that they are doing such things to their environment.

How sad are we, humans. We provoke our own problems and let it become a mess, just to regret later.

I love the critters, but they really need to go.. I've never even seen a red fox in real life, much less Australia, but the pictures I've seen have shown them mange-covered and in poor condition- why not kill two birds with one stone?

You know, dingoes are very effective predators of foxes (and feral cats, too). Yet we still shoot and poison them, and fence them behind stupid giant dingo fences.

*shakes head*

Great pic.

Wow, didn't know it was such a problem, but I can't deny that foxes are my favorite animal. Really well done, especially how it looks so real as if you had just captured a pic of a red fox in the wild. I can also see how it can simply blend into the scenery also.

P.S. Love the eyes of the red fox; how you draw and paint the eyes blow me away each time.

Really beautiful work. I HATE introduced species and what they do to the environment. The only one I know of that hasn't hurt anything was the camel in Australia because they already leave a very small footprint on their environment which helps them survive in the desert. Here in the US, you are allowed to hunt the birds that the English introduced ages back.

x33; I'm starting to run out of words to say how great your guys' works are!

seeing as you do traditional work, have you ever made a wrong stroke at a time you could not go back and just fix it? What kind of things do you do when the unpredictable occurs?

screwbald In reply to JourneyWithin [2009-02-26 23:14:08 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes--I've actually destroyed a number of pieces over the years. Most things with paint are fixable, though something like getting stray blobs of paint on a nice sky wash, or knocking my coffee onto my painting, or having unfortunate masking fluid mishaps are irreparable. ;]

Then, you just have to scrap the piece and move onto something else.

They are some adaptable little buggers! Really, we should've known better than to introduce them there. Introducing non-native species is a bad idea at the best of times; seeing as how Australia had such a unique evolutionary and environmenal situation, it was devastating.

We got ours, though...a, kudzu. *sighs*

really wonderful texture and color here. I love how the fox almost blends into the scenery but the eyes still pop. very natural!

I'd always been under the impression that they did just get introduced here for sport... I've had a look around the net and most sites seem to corroborate that. Here's what the Australian Goverment website had to say:

"The European red fox was deliberately introduced to Australia for recreational hunting in 1855 and fox populations became established in the wild in the early 1870s. Within 100 years the fox had spread across most of Australia, though it currently does not occur in the tropical north and some off-shore islands remain fox free."
- [link]

From what they say about the rabbit it sounds like at least some people were still releasing them after the fox had started being introduced.
