Description
Here is one of the Joker cards for the Endangered Ark card deck ( [link] ). He's in your outback, eating your numbats.Taking second place to feral house cats, the red fox is one of Australia's most problematic invasive predator. They were originally brought over in 1855 from Europe for the purpose of recreational hunting. Since then, their numbers have exploded, estimated around 7 million animals. They are responsible for the decline of many small marsupials, including the numbat. The fox is a very adaptable, elusive and prolific animal, and as such, is nearly impossible to contain or control. It continues to decimate populations of native species and there is no foreseeable solution.

Yes they are decreasing the population of bandicoots, however it is not the fault of foxes, but of human for bringing them for a stupid purpose.

The barbed wire adds a cool effect. It's like the fox is pacing trying to figure out how to get in.

NOOOO! DON'T EAT MY NUMBATS!
Beautifully rendered, if really sad, picture, it gets people thinking. The fence and the background vegetation in particular is awesome.
While researching numbats and the conservation of them, I read that they have had success with baiting foxes, but now those feral cats are filling the hole left by the foxes. Feral cats are even more of a problem because they don't go for the bait as much. :\

The invasive species problem carries political implications because it clashes animal rights with natural preservation. For one thing, invasive animals that are thriving in their introduced region could be going extinct in their native habitat which means that killing them can't be the only solution. There has to be a balance of hunting and trapping in order to make sure that the species not only dies out in the wrong region but can be sustained in the right region.

pfft animal activists have no say in what we hunt down here toher than "no hunting natives and a licence incertain states" i can hunt all year round on about 15 invasive spcies. no limitΒ

It's a great picture, but it is kinda sad that when I did a search for numbats on deviantART this was one of the pictures that came up.
I've gotten interested in numbat conservation lately when I noticed that there's so little awareness of them even here in Western Australia where they're supposed to be our state emblem.
It'd be great to see you do a proper picture of a numbat one day without the fox. I'd definitely buy a print!
BTW, just in case you're interested in numbat conservation at all, there is a group here in WA that's working to protect them: [link]

Incredible detail! Love it!! It almost looks like a photo! I love foxes, they are my favorite animal! I had no idea that they were a problem in the outback though... cant say that i didn't expect it though. Its not often that bringing a non native species into a foreign land ends well.

Its sad when you think that the wild cats and foxes should be irradicated from Australia even thogh its not there fault that there there. But i think that the native fauna should be considered first.

Good art. Not so sure about the info. This stuff is repeated in exactly this way so often, I wonder why Australia hasn't been completely devastated already.

we are..... just government runs everything.
we cna hunt foxes/rabbits/pigs/goats all year round. no limit. its just wipe them out. they are so bad. Β sorry i am replying to such an old post but i thought ti would make sense if i put some info in.Β

That is no problem. The thing is just this:
If these foxes are so devastating, why are any small native mammals left? And if you hunt them all year round (btw. just introduce wild dogs again they will get rid of goats at least) and they are still there, then it doesn't seem to be working. I mean has anyone ever researched as to why?

FancyFoxTaxidermy In reply to Asanbonsam [2014-02-19 06:20:21 +0000 UTC]
there is plenty of research being conducted at the moment.
wild dogs do just as much damage if not more. Β goats are not the worst thing...pigs are.
recently the government in QLD decided to actually check the problem and they shot over 30,000 wild pigs up north queensland.....Β
we have a website called feralscan that keeps track of the ferals..its fairly new so there isnt much there but its getting there.Β
foxes also rapidly breed. You can wipe them out in an area but they do travel and well they come back.Β
government doesnt seem to really care much of the wildlife here....look up what they are doing to the barrier reef. its horrible. i am ashamed to have such a government rule.

How can wild dogs do so much damage to the environment now if dogs have been there for millenia?
And quite frankly, I doubt you will ever get rid of the foxes. They have coevolved with humans and their ways for millenia, so unless your government adopts a scorched earth approach it will not work and the current killing is probably the reason why foxes breed so rapidly. It is a survival mechanism, especially when mass baiting creates big vacant spaces.

FancyFoxTaxidermy In reply to Asanbonsam [2014-02-22 08:51:36 +0000 UTC]
we dont use baiting....it caues to much trouble to the natives.
Oh you can shoot up to 500 in one area. Depending. But so far hunting has worked pretty good. Β If they allowed hunting in state forest then we could most likely get rid of them. but since they now live in the city it can get harder.Β
A lot of damage.....one animal cna kill hundreds of natives a month

Asanbonsam In reply to FancyFoxTaxidermy [2014-03-02 09:14:53 +0000 UTC]
You didn't answer my question regarding as to why dogs are suddenly so destructive if dogs have been in Australia for millenia. If the are allegedly so dangerous, why didn't they wipe out "hundreds of natives a month" (to use your own words) much earlier?
Also I can guarantee you. Hunting won't solve your fox problems. They tried that over here to control rabies and it never went beyond the extermination of some local populations, that's all. And these vacant spaces will be quickly recolonized.

π: 0 β©: 1
Asanbonsam In reply to FancyFoxTaxidermy [2014-03-07 12:09:56 +0000 UTC]
Small problem:
Dogs have been in Australia for millenia already and even their impact back then is disputed. In addition if there are more dogs now than before the British Invasion it is due to Australians creating environments that favor them and their main prey. After all you did not only add sheep and the like but due to your artifical water holes and all the other stuff you had led kangaroo numbers soar and so the dogs have more to eat and so can sustain higher population levels. That "problem," if it is one since its debatable how many pastoralists actually need the sheep to earn their income, is in every sense of the word home made. And killing the dogs will never solve that "problem". You want to get rid off them? Get rid of pastoralism.

I reckon feral pigs are pretty bad here as well, along with rabbits and foxes, luckily no foxes or rabbits roam where i live, mainly water buffalos, feral pigs and of course feral cats. I think this is a goregeous painting and depicts the cause of introduced animals perfectly. Its a beautiful deck by the way, some nice art works
