Description
Update:1/16/2016I remembered I posted this tutorial about 2 years ago when started making tutorials. The first intention was just simply hoping to share some methods. Also another way making friends here.
So far this article had reached 54,334 views, and I saw it has been shared somewhere that I wasn't expected in many countries. So I knew I should share more methods and tutorials from now on. Hope I can help more people who like to try sculpting, or stuck at the cross road which may need a little hints.
Anyway, thanks for your support, and please do let me know if this tutorial really helped! So I have a reason keep on doing, thanks!

It took me a while to make this simple tutorial of how to make figurine hand. Wish I have an extra hand to take pictures... It is pretty much self explain of step by step in the picture comparison. Although it looks simple but you do need the proportional conception of human's hand and fingers in mind. And also compare with the character that you are making. Make a good calculation for the size, think it over through, get it right at once.
Please note the nail should better be made from the beginning of each finger. You might not get a good position to sculpt the nails when putting fingers together. Only if you are making large size hands.
The picture shown with a shape knife meant when you going to bend the fingers. Make a shape cut but don't cut it off! Pull it up a little, bend it and fix a bit for the gaps after you bend it.
I make it in small scale so you may use the same skill to make larger hands. Hope this may help you a little. Please advise if you have any suggestion or question. Thank you for watching my friends! Enjoy!!

This method dose take longer and a bit of sculpting skill compares to cutting and fixing fingers for figurine. But the fingers are nimbly sculpted in position. Anyway, it's a method that you can use and turn into your own way. Also there are different ways to sculpt in some scales of figurines. I saw you are using monster clay, that's even easier to be formed, but probably hard to smooth the surface.
Thanks for your message!!

It has been a great help thank you for posting it. I smooth it with mineral spirits.

Great!
You may also use lacquer thinner (or so-called banana oil, isoamyl acetate), when almost finished, or in big area. Not sure if it can be double use with mineral spirits. Basically oil base like engine oil is ok too (not to much, it would dissolve a lot but smoothing out). But after brush these, it may lose a bit of details and sometime hard to add more clay. Just for your reference. You may try on small piece of clay first if you like.

I used your tutorial to make my first hand ever. I made it a man's hand because I wanted to do the LLAP hand sign. Thanks for sharing your talents with us. I love to learn new things and this was fun. Can't wait to make more.

I have been looking at hand tutorials for myself, and yours is probably the best one I've seen. Is there no need for an armature at this small size? I always worry about the fingers snapping off, but I can't imagine trying to sculpt over a tiny armature, but I made one anyway.

sculptor101 In reply to DragonLadyhere [2016-01-18 10:49:31 +0000 UTC]
The tutorial is for small scale of hands, you can add armatures to it if the clay model is bigger, otherwise you might not find a suitable wire size. When you have the armature for fingers, the shape has to be right in position and proportion first, they are not easy to adjust. Thanks for visiting my pages!

Thank you. I was just curious about armatures in small hands. I don't think I'm going to try one with a tiny armature in it, lol. You're right, they'd be awful to try and adjust.

You're welcome, I believe even you might find tiny wires, still not strong enough and probably costs more problems... ^^

Thanks so much, I thought as much, but so many others complain of easy breakage. I want to avoid all that, but like you say, a thin wire armature isn't going to do much.

Even if it's long I watched with pleasure. It actually gave me a kick to try this method but I worked with Cernit and it's way too soft when warm in hands. When I used Living Doll it was smuch better. Need to try the mix of these two, with less Cernit only to add strength. Living Doll is still my all time fave even though I recently turn more to stone clay (health issues).

There are many different material, type of clay that I have used, oil base, water base, new clay etc. I make prototypes for mass production, there are issues of molding and final material of product to be considered. Any clay is good if we use in a proper way. Thanks for your information! As long as we are in love with sculpting, anything is good to try.

I spent not much time making this tutorial, making hands for me was like an instinct, I didn't remember when did I start the way of making hands. Probably around 20 years ago. So I even wondered how it could possibly surprise anyone...
Anyway, I had been communicated with myself for too long maybe.
