Description
Making Little Mermaid Tutorial-Part 1, armature, torso, tail & rock baseIt's really easy to understand by following the pictures and compare them. You can figure out the turning points.
1. have your design ready, the armature, use paper clips apply with Super Sculpey, baked first when the shape is ok.
2. the rock base, make big portion first than adding the details by rocks and flakes.
3. the mermaid torso
4. hands, make the hands at the same time, either the size and details, so they wold look like a pair.
5. hands, take more time in these to make the hands look naturally rest on the chest.
6. tail, apply the clay and make it as smooth as possible.
7. fish scales, I use a small piece of pipe, this is actually a tip of dip pen. Practice in small area first, and make the fish scales in the right direction.

yes but how do you keep them stiff enough to still work on them and squishy enough to still add new clay on them. that's the confusing part. like when do you even bake? in between? at the very last? and how long does each baking process takes

I guess that I need to make a common Q & A for most of questions. I put the methods in some tutorials that I made but didn't have a complete process for them. The clay is soft, the baking timing is hard to explain, wait a bit, let me gather the methods in a article.

Doesn't your clay slide through the wire armature? I don't know how to say it... When I make the wire armature I have to cover it with foil, because if I apply clay directly on the wire it "slides/moves" and won't get attached to the wire... I hope you understand my point :\
All your tutorials are great

I know what you're saying. If you look carefully, for small figurine, I make the armature in position, apply a thin layer of clay around it, bake it first. So the clay wouldn't go anywhere. For bigger size, I make the armature, put aluminum foil, wrap thin wire around it, apply thin layer of clay, bake it first too. In case the clay still slip away, put some crazy glue before you apply the clay to the wires. Hope these may help!

What's the movement for making the fish scales with the tube? Do you press it in, do you swipe it, do you mash it? That looks very good, i just can't figure how you're getting such neat scales with it haha

It's simple to just push the metal tube in clay like 15 to 45 degrees angle with a steady hand. All you have to do is try it on the clay, you'll figure that out easily. ^^

Thanks! It started from water color pencils, and I thought why not made it into a mermaid figurine. ^^
