Making baby’s head and face tutorial

Some friends here asked me if I can be more clear with the methods in making baby's head. So I make this tutorial to explain how the process from preparing to finish. They are the methods that I use often in sculpting, you can arrange your own way. Think it all through before you work on it. The reference is really important in sculpting. Not just the pictures of face or head but also the find some sculpture images that you like, take some time to study, learn and think how they can be done.

Please compare with the pictures by numbers.

1 & 2:
*These two were the designs that I used for making Baby Enya Sculpture. I actually combined with two positions. And replaced the face from her pictures age 1 to age 2. The figure of age 1 is more chubbier, which is better in her appearance, so I use it for her body and outfits. But I like her face in age 2 which is much likeness as her age (she is 13 now) now. You can gather the most appeared expression for your baby figurine like I do.

*Remember to list out the reference of front, sides ad back view and faces in "the same scale"! So you won't mess with the sizes when sculpting all angles. That goes with any other sculptures.

3.
*Apply fresh clay, put a very thin layer of Sculpey softener to the baked armature/ clay if new clay won’t stick on the baked clay.

*You may also use super glue if new clay won’t stick on. But be careful when using it, only barely put a few drops in the connecting areas of baked armature and soft clay! Your fingers shall never touch the glue, otherwise you'll have lots of cleaning job to do...

*Compare the clay size with your design often, you can use "Vernier Caliper" to measure them both, and always check the CENTER LINE!

*Baby’s head is normally much bigger than you thought, especially the hindbrain and upper head!

*Add clay from the forehead, bridge of the nose, nose, upper lip, bottom lip to chin. Take your time, compare often with your reference or drawing.

4.
*It’s important to buildup the profile outline of clay first, according the profile of your figurine’s head, remember, in Super Sculpey, "adding clay is easier than taking it off".

*When the profile is correct, start adding clay in both side of forehead, brow areas, eyebrows, eye socket, cheeks, work on both sides at the same time, so their details are much evenly the same.

* Work on the basic likeness of face features. You are going to spend lots of time here, so take your time checking and comparing with your designs, reference. But don’t go to the detail yet. You can get into the detail after adding hairs, so you don't need to go back and forth to adjust it.

5.
Add hairs to the figurine. make them in several big, small, thick and thin portions, uneven layers would make the hairs much natural look.

*You can adjust the face while making hairs, try to look at the head from different angles, you may find the cheeks, forehead, eyes or lips somewhere are unbalanced. Make some changes when you found.

*Keep adding portions of hairs but don’t draw the lines yet, remember the hair won’t be crossed like an X, they are all gathered and tied up at one end on both sides.

6.
*Temporarily add the hair buns, why? I’ll show you later on.

*Keep adding portions of hairs, remember making the portions some are tightened some are loose.

*Add ears, carefully keep them in right proportion and position with her face.

*Normally baby’s ears are much bigger and lower then you thought.

*Baby’s hairs are fine and less then adult, they are reasonably thin when tightened.

7.
*Check every angles of hair portions, start adding lines when you are happy with them...

*Make the detail of ears at once, compare with your reference.

8.
*Cut off the hair buns, I gently hold it in hand to sculpt, now this may take a bit of sculpting scale. If you have made the bun in armature from the beginning, that may work too, but you might not get them in right position. So I give myself a little room to adjust.

*Make hair on the temples, apply with very thin layer of clay, smooth it out with you tool and finger, add fine lines.

*Make forehead bangs, apply with very thin layer of clay too, smooth it out with your tool and finger, add fine lines. Forehead bangs are naturally super fine and a bit fuzzy. You can make it like low-relief on forehead.

*When finished the hair buns, bake with 2 short sticks of paper clips, when finished, "bake them first".

*Put them back on after baked. Fix the gaps between hair and the buns.

 9.
*Before adding more fine lines, brush it nail polish remover with nylon brush.

*Now make the face detail and hair fine lines at the same time, so they all be the same scale of details.

*Lightly brush off the scrapes again and touch up final lines.

*Put on the beads of hair band and make the hair bands.

10.
*Check everywhere and bake it!

Easy! Right? Well, maybe not, you need some confidence and a lot of practice, I believe you can do it! Thanks for your time. Enjoy it!

I really can't thank you enough for this tutorial. So many pictures which is a HUGE help. I haven't been able to find anything like this and I have been trying SO hard to sculpt a baby for months and everything has turned out looking like a goblin so far, haha. Maybe this will help set me on the right path.

She looks really amazing, by the way- so cute and very much like the real thing. It's amazing. You are very good at making sculptures.

Thanks for leaving messages, so I can really see how my tutorials may work! It was troublesome talking pictures while I was sculpting. But the pictures may be able to show how a figurine come out.

Just keep on practicing on something you like first, when you get to know the ability of clay and yours, you'll become free making almost anything.

You are welcome! They are some hints or points that I usually use in figurine heads. If it works and friends here like it, I can make some more for figurine heads in different faces. There is always some new thoughts we can try. Please let me know if you have any comment to share, thanks dear!
