Making baby’s hands tutorial

After I make Making baby’s head and face tutorial, here is the way of Making baby’s hands tutorial to explain the methods I usually use in sculpting baby's hands. The pictures are adjusted for close up and only focus on hands. Follow the pictures, compare each picture from top to bottom, right to left, you may easily understand how the hands were formed.

You may see the first tutorial I made for reference:

Please compare with the pictures by numbers.

1.
*Prepare good reference of baby's hands that you are going to use on the figurine.

*Rank the fingers of both hands, right size and right proportion of each. This time you can make the nails now or later since the fingers are thick enough. Work on both hands at the same time, so their scales are the same.

*Adding fleshes and muscles of palms and back of the hands in right proportion, make basic form and structure. And they have to be opposite of course...

2.
*Her left hand rests on her thigh (low body, legs were baked), I trim the wire, cut the clay open and put a drop of super glue, because it become loose when working on her left arm. Put a drop so the clay sticks back on.

*Adjust the hand to be naturally rested on her thigh. Yes, I put a drop of glue in the inner area too, so it stays in position.

*Sculpt the left hand, leave the right hand aside. I put the right hand on just for size comparison.

*Fix the area between the arm and left hand, make it chubby look and add necessary wrinkles, the wrinkles of fingers too, work on it until finished. Don't forget to make the nails!

*Brush it with nail polish remover and nylon brush to smooth out the surface, make details again after brushed. check all of the upper body, arms, and left hand, bake it first without the unfinished right hand. You can make the whole thing at once if you like. But I leave the right hand the last because I can concentrate on it better.

3. & 4.
*When the body piece is baked, put it aside. I hold her right hand in my hand softly and gently. Work on the detail as much as I can. Don't forget to make the nails too!

*Put it on the wire of her right arm. You can poke a hole in the bottom of hand before you put it on the wire. Put a drop of super glue on the wire for better attachment. Just enough to hold it in position.

* Fix the area between the right arm (baked) and right hand, make it chubby look and add necessary wrinkles, the wrinkles of fingers too, work on it until finished.

*Brush it with nail polish remover and nylon brush to smooth out the surface, make details again after brushed.

*Check it and compare with the baked clay, bake it.

How do you like it! Let me know if you have any comment or question, your messages and supports are highly appreciate, thanks for viewing!

I don't even believe what I'm seeing. This is so amazing.. I bet this is how REAL babies are born.

Thanks a lot! These are some methods that I have been asked many times, and I think the better way is to list them out.
Making baby figurine is so much fun but not easy to express.

Thanks so much, you really don't appreciate how different baby's hands are until you have a go at depicting them!

You are welcome! Unlike making superhero, monster or other heavy textured figurines, baby looks simple but not easy. All I can try is to make it a natural look.
