Description
Update:1/16/2016I remembered I posted this tutorial about 2 years ago when started making tutorials. The first intention was just simply hoping to share some methods. Also another way making friends here.
So far this article had reached 54,334 views, and I saw it has been shared somewhere that I wasn't expected in many countries. So I knew I should share more methods and tutorials from now on. Hope I can help more people who like to try sculpting, or stuck at the cross road which may need a little hints.
Anyway, thanks for your support, and please do let me know if this tutorial really helped! So I have a reason keep on doing, thanks!

It took me a while to make this simple tutorial of how to make figurine hand. Wish I have an extra hand to take pictures... It is pretty much self explain of step by step in the picture comparison. Although it looks simple but you do need the proportional conception of human's hand and fingers in mind. And also compare with the character that you are making. Make a good calculation for the size, think it over through, get it right at once.
Please note the nail should better be made from the beginning of each finger. You might not get a good position to sculpt the nails when putting fingers together. Only if you are making large size hands.
The picture shown with a shape knife meant when you going to bend the fingers. Make a shape cut but don't cut it off! Pull it up a little, bend it and fix a bit for the gaps after you bend it.
I make it in small scale so you may use the same skill to make larger hands. Hope this may help you a little. Please advise if you have any suggestion or question. Thank you for watching my friends! Enjoy!!

I think it should be ok, the tutorial is just a way of skill that you may use, the most important thing is thinking why would I do it that way. Is there any other better way?
Yes, pick some materials that you can afford first!

There are many reason the sculpts break after bake. It shrinks if you have armature inside, I usually use fast dry crazy glue to save and fix a little when it dries.

Nota bene - this tutorial isn`t suitable for FIMO)))

I think tutorials are the basic skills for inspiration. There are materials like oil base, water base clay and new clay like Sculpey or Fimo, or maybe lightweight clay, paper clay, air dry... You might figure them out in your way so things are easier to handle. Hope you find others more useful!! ^^

It`s ideal for Living doll)))
I think that tutorial itself is very... understandable. I noticed about FIMO for those who want to try making hand of this material. They`ll be upset like me. It`s better to start trying with more suitable clay and have a successful experience, isn`t it? ^_____^

I actually tried a couple blocks of Fimo that I have in hand. It works ok to me. But I understand the frustration of handling. I believe it won't hurt to try something else. ^^

so Alex, nice tutorial buddy. How do you get the finger sausages to be firm enough to not flop about? did you brush them with Nail Polish remover first to stiffen them? Revlon brand wasn't it?
I would probably go this route if using oil-clay or wax. I'll have o try this way though.

The nail polish remover I use only for smoothing the surface, I'm not intended to stiffen the clay on purpose by it. I usually make hands like my tutorial and attached on the hand armature as what it is, and adjust it according to the figure naturally.
If you are using oil base clay or wax are even easier to handle. But take a little longer time to scrap it a lot. ^^

It is easy if you spend more time get to know the materials you are working on. Knowing where are you goning and how to get there without guessing around, things will be easier. ^^

Please refer to my tools tutorial at:

The key points are wood tools, nail polish remover/ or denatured alcohol and nylon brushes.
Hope these may help, let me know if you have any question, thanks! ^^

Thanks a lot!
I didn't expect artists at DA would like the tutorial so much and asked for many other tutorials as well. Now I need to list out and find some time to do it. Such as hairs, folds of cloth, armature, so many how to... I guess I'll do it one after another later on.
Sure, I'll put it in the list. ^^

Head-ZonkStudios In reply to sculptor101 [2013-12-19 20:08:24 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I haven't given up. I can't, I gotta have hands for the figures I'm making.
It's just that when you get to working on something that's small enough to loose up your nose, you can't make things the same way as if you were working on a 7 inch tall figure, or even a 3 inch one.
So far I've found that the best way is to have the fingers be made of wire and then mold everything together.

sculptor101 In reply to Head-ZonkStudios [2013-12-20 00:15:31 +0000 UTC]
I deal with mass production issues most of time, so I always think of molding possibility. Because when it goes to the manufacturer, the workers are not artists.
But at least, we want to make our sculptures last for a long time to keep. Yes, cover the clay with wires is important! ^^
