Description An early design of one of my characters: Julia Snader, the, well, snader (snake/spider). I chose to make a snake/spider creature because why draw an embodiment of one animal which far too many people are needlessly afraid of when I can draw TWO animals that far too many people are needlessly afraid of? I tried to achieve a fairly even balance of spider-like features and viper-like features. Some of their features harmonize well. For example, a viper's head just happens to have a shape similar to a spider's cephalothorax, and they both just happen to have a pair of venom-secreting fangs at the front of their face which are folded when not in use.

In her world, Snader works for law enforcement and is the obligatory "bad cop" of her respective buddy cop duo. She uses her appearance (as well as her ability to turn invisible and reappear at will) to intimidate and distract suspected criminals. Snader is capable of speech, but only in a harsh whisper that has the unintended consequence of making her sound perpetually angry. Many people she meets mistakenly believe that she has no sense of humor, as she never seems to laugh at anything other people find funny. In actuality, she does have a sense of humor--it's just one that seems alien to everyone else. Specifically, she finds certain initially-consistent patterns interrupted by incongruities (such as a long row of tiles where a single tile is the wrong color, or an abrupt jump in a number series such as 1-2-3-4-5-95,852) to be uproariously hilarious.

She's so pretty!
I especially like the end of her tail..abdomen..tail? with the spinnerets and all. The four sets of viper eyes are also pretty awesome, but I can't help but worry about strain on her delicate waist.. neck.. joining.. place
Man, talking about anatomy has never been so confusing.

Thanks! I'm not sure what to call her waist/neck either, but now that you mention it I can see how it looks like it would be strained. Snader actually uses both her legs and her ventral scales to move, which at least partially mitigates the "neck" strain. Snader inhabits a fantasy universe where the laws of physics are inconsistent at best and giant boneless levitating creatures are an everyday sight, so I tend to give some fanciful anatomical features a free pass even if they would be completely infeasible in real life.

This is pretty awesome  Is everyone in this world a sentient, non-anthropomorphic animal-hybrid?  Or is Julia unique?  I would totally watch a cop show where everyone was human except for the one giant snake-spider hybrid.  Heck, I would watch a cop show if EVERYONE was a snake-spider hybrid!

Julia Snader inhabits a world that is actually the product of another character's imagination. This character essentially used magic to play god and create a universe-within-a-universe whose contents and properties were made up on the fly. This world contains a mix of purely-fantasy beings with no real-world equivalent, every known species that exists on earth, and an infinite array of unclassifiable hybrids. Virtually every species present has a small proportion of individuals with human-like intelligence. Moreover, any two sentient beings, regardless of species, can use artificial means to produce hybrid offspring (though the results are not always viable or pleasant). As you might imagine, this results in a world where most civilizations are a chaotic kaleidoscope of different sentient beings of all shapes and sizes.
Julia's "buddy cop" partner, incidentally, is a marine snail (mostly based on a fighting conch) who can manipulate time around him to compensate for his very slow locomotion.

That is pretty sweet.  Have you actually written anything set in this world?  Or created other characters?
