Description English
Be absolutely honest, if you know the bible you know it has explicit content. It has nudity, sexual themes including: fornication, sodomy, grupal sex, incest; it has violence: torture, mutilation, stoning, lynching, homicide, suicide, genocide, fratricide, infanticide and almost everything that ends in "cide". I don't think (honestly) that children should be exposed to this material until they're old enough to "understand" it. However, I've never seen a warning label on the cover of the bible...

Dag. Seriously. It's pretty much every other day that I see something on the news about some Bible-corrupted child who's avidly sought God and truth all of his life eventually growing up and playing a key part in some murder or bank robbery or any other sort of crime.

Oh wait. No. I don't see that. That's not at all what the Bible teaches. (And I've read and do read it, yes.)

And ours is a numbed generation that's come to celebrate pointless destruction, disgusting cruelty, and extreme self-indulgence, so it's hard for me to take such things as sincere rather than just spiteful and hypocritical.

Really, though, the Bible is an historical book. And whether one chooses to believe its more abstract claims or not, scholars and people who'd be in positions to make such calls pretty much agree that it's correct at least from historical, geological, and archaeological stand-points. That is to say that it's not for entertainment. It's not some fictional story. Like teaching students about all the wars and blood-shed throughout the history of the world. It's not cool that that happened, obviously, but it did. It's a part of our history.

Also, the Bible's big. I honestly wasn't bludgeoned over the head with all the gritty, explicit things you're mentioning when I was a child, though I grew up in the church. I was taught pretty much the kid-friendly stories and lessons until I was old enough to understand and consider and read for myself. And while I think neither I nor you is qualified to say for certain whether or not the same is true for all other children who're taught the Bible at a young age, it honestly is a legitimate thought, and, in my opinion, would sort of be reasonable to assume.

And (This last part's gonna make it seem like I'm just being spiteful or jerky just because I disagree with the view the work reveals, but I'm actually just being honest) on the artistic side, it's not really very well done.

ok. two things:

1) My point is that children should be mature enough to read the bible. That's all.

2) I done this illustration along with other 4 in 2 days, I focused on the message rather than the medium.

JoranMesser In reply to scuzzo [2009-01-17 03:13:31 +0000 UTC]

1) I understood and responded to that. If you're not aware, at current, yeah, I disagree with you. Like . . . that isn't reasonable. (And I highly doubt you care much about ensuring the well-being of children by protecting them from all the corrupting horrors of the Bible.) Um . . . Ok. Yes. I shouldn't be snappy and such, really. It contributes more to the arguing than the reaching of some understanding. I'm not trying to just be contrary. I'm trying to honestly communicate my thoughts and why I think they're quite reasonable. But yes. Why shouldn't children be exposed to it? What negative effects do you know of it having? Be honest. List them all, please. With movies and most other forms of media that many would view as inappropriate for kids, it's because it's usually not very (if at all) about portraying negative things as negative. And really, if we think death and killing and such is so horrible and so many things are so terrible for children to have to think of, why do so many of us get our kicks from such things? Why would it taint a child's "innocence", but there be absolutely nothing wrong with us partaking in it? Eh. Thoughts straying. I apologize. Really, though, reading about something negative that historically happened and that's viewed in an entirely negative way isn't at all like watching some terrible gore flick that exists entirely to feed and indulge the violent side of humanity. Just like telling a kid, "It's wrong to kill people." That seems entirely reasonable to me, and even though it ventures to acknowledge the dark, not at all kid-friendly concept of . . . *gasp* death, it's not like telling a kid, "Hey, Jim. Killing people's cool." And really, that's what a lot of media does at it's core. It practically glorifies such things as crime and murder and careless sexual indulgence. And really, it seems like people have less problem with things like that . . . They do, that is . . . which is wrong. And whether we'll admit or not, I think we all understand that.

But eh . . .

2) I guess if you were aware of and unconcerned with the truth that (even aside from the fact that, yeah, it's entirely unoriginal and silly), artistically, it's very lousy, there's no further point to be made as far as that goes. You just work strangely, in my opinion, if that's the case. That is . . . I try to do things well? Whether the finished product's great or not, I try, I mean. It's weird to me that you'd not try to make it look decent or that you'd not care that it sucks? And yeah. It's not good.

And the majority I see agreeing with the view it portrays (and the means they use to communicate their support), would, were I you, actually warn me that it's not as sincere and logical as it is based entirely on presupposition or the instinct of people to avoid anything that would bring them to some greater responsibility.

Truth, whether we can convincingly argue otherwise or not, is truth.

If you respond, be honest, and consider the things I've said and the legitimacy and sincerity of the things you would say. Please don't use false reasoning or anything like that, I mean, just for the sake of appearing to have won a debate.

This is so true. I couldn't help but feel like I was reading a trashy adult novel when I've studied it. The irony here is that Christian schools across the nation teach it from kindergarten up, but often stop at 6th grade when the kids can actually start to understand what it's about.

yup, it's weird: you can "choose" a religion as a baby (baptism), but they won't let you vote for a president until you're 18 (at least here in Argentina)

I technically never chose religion till age 7, but I think I chose the right one regardless. I still think that to accept a religion one has to understand just what they're doing. Otherwise.. well what's the point?

Insecticide! I don't think the bible has that in it

But on a serious note, I've always found it funny how society will cover a child's eyes faster if there is sex rather than if there is death. For instance, in school we were watching the modern re-telling of Romeo and Juliet.
We weren't allowed to see them do anything more than kiss (Remember, there's nothing explicit in the modern version), and yet the teacher had no problem with the suicide.
Yes, the entire story leads up to that suicide, but a suicide ought to take priority over sex, as sex happens naturally, whilst suicide is unnatural, due to the basic survival instincts programmed into almost every living being.

'Course, someone is going to say something about me being some horny hormonal teen whilst ignoring my logic...
