Description
"You can stop counting."--
My submission to 's newest theme for this week, Pony Inspired by a Book. Sort of. Actually, I kind of bent the theme a little and did it a little differently. Instead of portraying a ponified character from a book like everyone else has done, I opted to do a ponified scene from a book. Hopefully it still counts this way.
Anyway, this pic is portraying a pivotal scene from Ray Bradbury's book, "Fahrenheit 451." It was an idea I had originally gotten from the theme a few weeks back, "A pony's greatest fear," but despite it being a cool idea, it didn't fit the theme. At first I was going to do it anyway as a little side project (that way I could take as long as I felt it needed) but then this theme came up, and it happened to just barely fit, so I used it as an excuse to put it together.
But this is why Twilight appears in this pic. 'Cuz I wasn't going to do the pic without her, in short.
I suppose the two fireponies are Montag (right) and Beatty (left), but I didn't really have anypony specific in mind with either of them, so they can be whoever you want them to be.
For those familiar with the book, this is the scene where they're at the house filled with books that they are about to burn, but the old lady who lives there refuses to leave and ends up setting the kerosene-doused books aflame herself. Except Twilight has replaced the old lady (relic from the original theme I had devised the pic for).
Speaking of which, the pic's title, and the quote for Twilight (above), are both exact quotes from the book.
I was going to shade this, but it took longer to color this pic than I expected (it was those darn books) and decided it looked pretty good as is, so I left it like that for now. I might go back and shade it later, though, time permitting, because what I have in mind would add emphasis on the situation. EDIT 4/1/2012: Finally sat down and shaded this, displaying the lighting I had in mind. It does make it seem much more dramatic, and makes the original feel plain in comparison.
Oh, and there's a little cookie (not a literal cookie) hidden in the pic. I'm curious if anybody will see it.

Great job! I loved this book so much. It needs more fanart though... I find it impressive that you even got the "#451" on the suit.
NO! THESE ARE MY BOOKS! AND IF THEY BURN, I'LL BURN WITH THEM!

...which actually brings up a point I'm only just now thinking of...
Since we've seen Twilight spontaneously combust before-- --wouldn't that make her kind of...you know...fireproof?

Possibly. In the episode "It's About Time", Twilight is hit with Spike's fire and winds up with nothing but a few scorch marks and a burnt mane. This could be because Spike's flame is only used to sent mail to/from Princess Celestia, and since we don't really know much about his fire it's a pretty bad judge of things. Besides, we have seen him light things on fire before (The bonfire for the Apple Family Reunion and the torch at the Equestrian games are two good examples.) For all we know, Twilight once cast a spell on herself to make herself fire-resistant. I have no doubt that she could, if she wanted to. It's possible that, in the picture, she'd drop the match to set off some fake smoke and teleport to safety with her books .

It is a good read, but it's also very deep, makes you think a lot, so if you DO read it, be prepared for that.
But yes, it's a good book, and a fairly quick read too. The book has a very rapid-pace feel to it.

I like that kind of thing, so I probably will check it out. Thanks for the heads-up, though.

Again, not a literally cookie, meaning there's not a cookie hidden something in the pic.
Just a little secret reference.
If anybody's noticed though, they haven't mentioned it yet, though.

Technically no, but now that I think about it, there is a reference in that, but rather an obscure one. I'm not even sure one well versed in the media I'm referring to with those matches would catch it.
Give you a hint, though, look at the fireponies's uniforms.
Actually, I'm kind of surprised no one's mentioned it yet by now, which makes me wonder if it's more obvious than I've been giving it credit for, and everybody's been overlooking it because of it.
Or nobody's really noticed it yet. I dunno, it's hard for me to tell from here.
Another hint so to satisfy my conscience: the hidden cookie does deal with ponies.

Why should I look? All I see are a "$51" label and a patch or the "Lunar Repub-"
OOOOOOOOH. THAT's what you were talking about.

Yeah, I was quite pleased by that expression myself. A look of defiance, but also a look that she's getting tired of fighting.

He has written some good ones. I dunno if Fahrenheit 451 is my favorite, but it's still pretty good either way.
