Description
I am busy applying the skills I learnt from my color study onto my:Β ChallengeΒ MasterStudiesAndMore . It may take a while before I can upload...kind of behind on finishing that illustration. In the meantime, here is another illustration I did in pen. I wanted to, at the time, see if I could do multiple textures using pen. I love how it turned out but I have to admit, it is a bit messy.Related content

Thank you!!!Β Β It was really interesting to draw...the picture I took looked really difficult to draw and so at the time my brain was likeΒ Β Β It's one of those images where, even though it was really busy and had a lot of texture and tree's, the people in my area could still tell where that was..that part blew my mind!!! that people could see where it was that I drew without me saying anything.Β

The project was for us to do a drawing/sketchbook thing for what we did in the holidays (this was around the time when the soccer world cup took place in South Africa and all our schools and universities had 4 months off. We suppose to do some artsy thing for our project, I forget exactly what it was for. There was a clause at the end of the project - meant as a joke - that read "do not do this in the last 2 weeks of your holiday...I totally did it in the last 2 weeks of the holiday)
I did not get up to much over this period of time plus I am not a big sports person so I had no idea of what to do. I decided maybe I could draw where I live instead (weirdly enough, not much is known about where I live and the culture. The 'coloured community" in South Africa is not very well known or talked about much and every time I mention where I am from, people either do not know where that is or think it is a very crime-ridden, scary place to be. I thought it would be interesting to do it as a study. It took me 10 to 12 hours per page to do. Even though I did not have much time, I still wanted to see if I could draw everything in its detail using a pen (this is why I say I overcomplicate my life sometimes).
It was worth it though...sort of...we suppose to do 2 sketchbooks...the other one totally sucks in comparison because I did not have much time to do it in...because I am an idiot...I also ran out of ideas...so I sort of made a weird comic book adaption of events that took place. We have this oil refinery that is situated very, VERY close to the community (back in apartheid times, the ideas was that we - the "coloured community" - were basically meant to work there). Anyway, once there was a lightning strike and one of the tankers caught on fire (we were always told growing up that if the refinery was to blow up, it could wideout a huge chunk of were I stay (don't know how true that is) so having one of the tankers on fire was kinda not really cool, but because it was so weird, most of the community all got into their cars and basically drove towards the flames and just watched it as it raged on, lol (lasted for three days or so). Even more so we still went to school, and the school that I went to, was directly opposite the refinery. I could see the flames from my window in maths class. My second sketchbook was a sort of comic book of that, which I rushed through (keep in mind that I have never drawn a comic before). Needless to say that it was crappy in comparison and my lecturer told me how good the first one was and how crappy the second one was soooo ya. Uhm...bit too much information but to answer your question again, 10 - 12 hours per page which took a week and some change. The second book took 3 days.Β
It was not really hard to draw, anyone could do it if you give yourself enough time. It's like your frog. All the finer details like leaves and grass are done like how you would do hair, basically, scribble until it works out.

Thank you!!! Β It was actually majority in pen and some of the shading was in pencil.Β I had never really done a big project in pen before and this was my first time (I did one or two small drawings before but this project consisted of like 10 individual drawings all in pen). It stems from the fact that I knew a guy in campus who could draw characters from imagination with pen from scratch. I am very competitive when it comes to drawing and so I started to push myself more and more in pen illustrations and when this project came along, it seemed like a good idea to dive head first into it using this medium.
