Notes about fauns:
What exactly is a faun? Fauns are an ancient Roman mythological creature which is described as having the upper body of a man with the ears and horns and legs of a goat. They're creatures of the untamed woodlands.
Over the last century, people have begun to incorrectly describe fauns as the equivalent of the Greek satyrs. However, they're very different creatures. Satyrs have horse-like features and are much more mischievous and licentious than fauns. Satyrs are also known for their unrelenting pursuit of creatures of the female persuasion. Fauns, on the other hand, are more benign and jovial. They're known for their merry making and festivities, dancing, telling jokes, eating delicious foods and (most famously) making music with their magical pipes. They're also notoriously charming and likable to the point that wicked fauns were fabled to sometimes use charm to lure their unsuspecting victims into the deep woods in order to rob them.
Aside from being part goat, fauns also have deer-like features. They also have long goat-like ears and some fur down their arms.
Another difference between fauns and satyrs is that fauns have long tails, and satyrs have goat tails. Plus, satyrs look more like human-sized goats that walk on their hind legs.
Fauns enjoy dancing happily around bonfires, along with satyrs, dryads, nymphs, and nixies, at night, and playing on their musical instruments, usually pipes, when they dance.
The fauns are some of King Auoberon's most trusted servants, since they're loyal, noble and kind creatures.
Aside from being jovial and mild tempered creatures, they can also be quite naïve and foolish
Fauns also have a long lifespan. Exactly how long they live? I think two hundred years.
Fauns vary in size. Some fauns can be taller than a human (7ft), other times they can be the size of small children.
Despite being feared by those who travel in the wild, they're actually said to help travelers who have become lost.
Fauns are forest dwellers. They live in areas with rough grounds with rocks all about and little hills up and little hills down. They make their homes in caves (using large boulders to conceal the entrance). A faun's dwelling area is usually a nice place. Little, but dry and clean, with nice furniture, a fireplace with a fire burning merrily in it, and a shelf full of books.
In mythology, fauns were considered to be rural spirits or lesser deities. The Romans believed fauns as manifestations of animal and forest spirits. They can help or hinder men travelling in remote places.
Fauns are often associated with the Greek God Pan, Silenus, and Dionysus (or the Roman equivalent Bacchus).
Fauns aren't as pervy as satyrs. They're more gentle and shy. And even when they are being perverted, they're more covert and polite about it.
They live in harmony with nature, and are generally just low-key and peaceful. They are also thought to have poetic imaginations.
