Description This originated as an idea where a character is paddling on an endless sea towards a distant island, convinced that she will be noticed once she reaches her destination. The plot twist is that the sea is full of different colored little rafts, all of them unique and all insignificantly tiny compared to the vast ocean.

I started with a black drawing of the paddler on a white background. Then I switched the background to blue and started painting colored lights in the distance with a mixer brush. I ended up erasing multiple times and trying different things. Eventually I had most of the background finished and I decided to leave it be. Then I kept drawing on the top layer for the next several hours. The coffee cup boat went through a lot of back and forth because everything affects everything, so even if the lighting would work at one point, it would break in the next. The ear of the coffee cup was initially in the side, but I changed the angle to make more room for the paddle. I like the brown clouds because there are so many high saturation elements that it's good to have something of low saturation to balance it out. In the end, I tweaked the levels just slightly.

It's a simplified character. I imagine it's wearing a hooded cloak. Originally I was going to draw something more cartooney with hair and all, but I quickly realized that this character doesn't need to be personified because it stands for everybody who's still halfway on their journey.

Ahhh the colours are wrapping me this nightly blanket.
Can almost hear the tired splashing of the paddle in the silent waters.
Those lights must be a sight but also a bit frighting after paddling so long with only yourself as company.

I like the painterly style you used in this piece. The background and the sea reflections are painted in a way that it doesn't even look like a digital drawing. Reminds me of watercolors but with much more saturation in it.

The only thing that could be improved is that the person is not visible that much because it's dark as the background. putting some rimlight or highliths on the coat would make the character (the main focus) stand out more. Especially the main focus of the piece should be clearly visible even when the painting is in thumbnail size. You can always do the test to check that .

Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment. I could still adjust the visibility later on because the character is on a separate layer than the background (although there are some parts of the background that may have been painted on the top layer because I was telling myself I won't let this rely on adjustments. But it's not as critical as in some earlier pieces. Now that I've slept overnight, I can see some small areas that would benefit from changes, but I need to make sure I won't overdo it. The desire to tweak everything is strong, so I need to be careful not to mess with areas that already work as it is. I suppose I could work inside a selection so that I would know which borders not to cross.
