I'm glad to hear that! It's actually my current personal favorite, so it feels extra special to hear from others who appreciate it just as much.

I found your artwork through My first thought when looking at this was "this kinda gives me a chilling feeling." I mean that. It's kinda of unsettling but in a good way. You did very well with the color choice and shading. The one thing I praise the most is the expression on this boy, girl or it (could be a genderless humanoid). It's got a dead eyed look. It's like it's looking into the viewer's soul, judging their actions and feeling so disappointed over what the viewer has become. Your painting made me think about the Crying Boy paintings. Ever heard of those? Paintings of sad children who supposedly can't be burned and gives off an unsettling feeling to people who look at them. I think that's what you were going for; invoking emotion. I like the painting greatly. It's creepy, it's beautiful, it makes me wonder what this person is, why is this person wearing a black cloak of death, why do they look upset but at the same time, trying to convey human emotion but only being able to do it with their mouth like they're some kind of non-human and lastly, why do they have a colorful bird on their shoulder? Is the robin suppose to trick the viewer into thinking the person is benevolent? I assume it's robin. I'm not a bird watcher but my Godmother is. Very nicely done.Β

Thank you for your comment. It's nice to see that a work of mine can evoke so many thoughts in a viewer. I'm glad that I have managed to create a face that has something inhuman about it, and that viewers can't definitely put it in any category (man, woman, human, alien, supernatural creature, artificial construct?) It's interesting that you are interpreting it as the character being disappointed in the viewer. I didn't process my thoughts in detail when I was working on this, but I get the feeling that the character is somehow emotionally numb, yet hurting deeply at the same time. There's a lot of stiffness in the expression like it had turned into a mask, that can lead into thoughts of "is this character truly alive, was it ever alive in the first place?"
The bird is indeed intended as a robin. It's mainly there to introduce a contrasting red element to the green skin, but it can be read as a symbol for what ever the viewer sees fit. The bird is definitely organic and alive, facing the character, maybe observing. Is the bird sad or compassionate? I get the feeling that the bird doesn't judge, and it represents something opposite to what ever the character represents. But I don't want to nail down any meanings. Any thought process that a viewer gets from this is valid and equally valuable. Again, thank you.

Β Hey you! I'm from Project Comment... The details are really nice,Β

shows a kind of sadness, anger, I do not know how to define very well, I'm pretty confused as to this, anyway, your drawing transpires emotions in a beautiful way, I really liked it, anyways,Β the bird is amazing as the idea.
Β The shadows seem to have been thrown in a way that the drawing and the face seem unsettling and in a way, it gives me a warm feeling despite the cold in the belly..
Β Keep it up, your works are really interesting,
the one in main has inspired me a lot!

Hello, I'm from Project Comment.
I like the feeling of sadness and despair, provided by the great use of colours and details of the hoody and unsmiling face.
Also the composition is proper and the bird is in nice, vivid and contrasting colours to the sad person. Very interesting idea to combine a black hoody and a cheerful bird.
The thing maybe to change, in your subjective opinion, is to add a shade from a hoody on the face, so there would be a contrast ond not so outstanding, and a shadow to the bird so it would be more grounded to the person.
I find your artwork eye catching, and i like when the drawing is three dimensional, that is why I made such suggestions. The main idea is great
Struggling with founding a balance between realistic approach and more imaginary is difficult, and I think you are on a good direction in this long way. Thank you for sharing your art.

Thank you for commenting. I didn't think very much about which way the light is coming from when I was working on this. Having the hood cast a shadow was something I considered, but I sort of felt that most of the shadow would be hidden behind the cloth, so only a little bit is visible on the highest part of the forehead. Yet I recognize that it could be darker. It's a bit hard for me to figure out how far the hood sticks out in front. I never drew the part of the face that's behind the cloth, so if I wanted to reveal more of it, I would have to add more details to the revealed area. It's a good point that the bird would look more grounded if it had a shadow. I was thinking that the cloth is already so dark that shadows wouldn't show on it, but it's not pure black, so there would be room to have the bird cast a shadow.

I love the emotion and mysteriousness of this one. The colour scheme works wonders in conveying feeling.

Thank you. Last year when I made the first version, I could feel that there was something... magical about the combination of colors, but later I realized that the composition and lack of sharp transitions was keeping it from being as effective as it could, so when I started this remake, I started with just the main blobs of color (the green, black, and background) and tried different combinations until I was in a situation where I had the face and the hood, and the moment I added the dark area that stands for the chest and shoulders, it sort of grounded it and I could instantly recognize that the ratio of green to black to background had reached some magical balance. After that it was just a matter of adding the shading and details. I think that there is some built in feature in the human brain that makes certain geometric divisions appear appealing, but not knowing the numbers behind it, I can only strike into it through trial and error.

Thank you - a feeling of deep upset was indeed what this is going for, so I'm glad to hear that it works the way I intended it.

Thank you, I'm glad the difference is noticeable. This time I made sure that the primary colored regions formed a powerful/effective shape before I went into detail. In the past, I have almost always felt forced to make sure that any character is fully visible in a picture, resulting in too much whitespace. Allowing some parts to extend beyond the borders of the image makes it so much more effective.

yesyes, I can see everything clearly, the old one was a bit blurry, this one has stronger and sharper shapes, and overall everything is just much better
