These are Rashinel a type of bird native to the planet Nlia

NLIA
Nlia , is a planet that exists in my AU Star Trek ‘Saratoga’ verse
seekhim.deviantart.com/gallery…

It is the home of the  Nlians who are members of the United Federation of Planets

The planet has three landmasses:
The Northern Land: A tiny northern island continent, roughly the size of Great Britain
The Western Land: A large western continent the size of Eurasia
The Eastern Land:  A large eastern continent about the size of Asia.

The two southern continents are collectively referred to as the Southern Lands
They are comprised mostly of desert with arid grasslands at the northern coasts and southern tips.

NORTHERN CONTINENT
In stark contrast, to the Southern Lands the small  Northern Continent is covered with thick forests.
It is comprised of three regions: the Northern Mountains, the Central Forests and the Southern Forests

The Northern Mountains region is heavily forested
The Central Forests region is covered with towering temperate forests. Most of which are many times larger than Earth trees
The Southern Forests region is covered with rainforest and swamps.

RASHINEL
Rashinel are large birds of prey indigenous to the Northern Continent

Territory
Rashinel primarily live along the coastlines although some are found by other large bodies of water.
A few live on the northern coastlands of the Western Contient.

Biology
Rashinel are the largest birds on Nlia

Unlike Earth birds, Rashinel have two sets of wings.
Males are slightly larger than females and have feathered head crests.

Males are reddish in color.
Females come in shades of orange and yellow with green feathers

Lifespan
They can live for up to 60 years.

Diet
Rashinels are carnivores but feed almost exclusively on fish
In the rare instances when fish aren't available they feed off carrion and other birds and mammals.

Behavior
Rashinel are solitary except during mating and nesting seasons.
They maintain territories of up to 50 square miles
They are resident, generally remaining in their territory all year.

Rashinel build several earies in their territories
Those on the coasts live on cliffs while those further inland nest in trees

Non-paired Rashinel stay out of other Rashinels' territories.
If one intrudes the resident makes threat displays and aggressive flapping.
Physical altercations are rare.

Mating

Although solitary Rashinal are monagomous.
They have elaborate courtship rituals involving spectacular flight displays.

Once mated the pair share a territory although most of the time live in seperate nests.
Mates form very strong bonds and if one dies the other often dies soon after from grief.

Reproduction
Rashinel usually lay 1-3 eggs
Eggs take about 30 days to incubate.

Young are able to fly at three months.
They leave to find their own territories at four months.
Rashinel are sexually mature at the age of five and look for a mate.

Relations with Nlians
For millennia the Nlians of the Northern Continent greatly regarded the Rashinel.
They were renowned for their size, hunting prowess and beauty.
The ancient tribes regarded them as almost sacred.
Around 700 B.C. Nlian began to domesticate some of them as mounts.

Riders

Only certain people can ride Rashinel, the Sky Riders.
For centuries Sky Riders served as messengers, couriers, scouts, teachers and guardians of wildlife.
Their importance as messengers diminished with the rise of technology but they are still honored as teachers and guardians.
A nickname for them is Stewards of the Sky

Training to be a Rider has very strident physical demands and is a lifelong committment.
Trainees raise a hatchling from birth and form a lifelong bond with it.
