This is a Ximo, an animal native to the planet Nlia
NLIA
Nlia , is a planet that exists in my AU Star Trek ‘New Start’ verse
seekhim.deviantart.com/gallery…
It is the home of the Nlians who are members of the United Federation of Planets
The planet has three landmasses:
The Northern Land: A tiny northern island continent, roughly the size of Turkey.
The Western Land: A large western continent the size of Eurasia
The Eastern Land: A large eastern continent about the size of Asia.
The two southern continents are collectively referred to as the Southern Lands
They are comprised mostly of desert with arid grasslands at the northern coasts and southern tips.
SKY MOUNTAINS
The Sky Mountains are a mountain range that stretches across much of the northeastern border of the Eastern Continent
They are the tallest mountains on Nlia, ranging between 4000-6000 meters high (Comparable to the Andes) and famous for their majestic appearance.
The region, like the rest of the continant, is hot and arid in climate.
During the day temperatures are hot but at night temperatures at high altitudes can drop to freezing
In many areas vegetation is sparse and water sources limited to springs.
Other areas have rivers and more vegetaton.
XIMOS
Ximos are small four-legged, mammals indigenous to the Sky Mountains.
They are the largest mammals on the continent.
They can live for about 20-25 years
Habitat
Ximos mostly inhabit the alpine and sub-alpine zones of the mountains at elevations from 3000-5000 meters.
They live in alpine meadows, mountain slopes and foothill country.
They sometimes descend to sea level in coastal areas but prefer the high country.
Biology
Ximos are well adapted to their mountainous habitat.
They're able to climb and jump along steep, rocky slopes and cliffs.
Their hooves are hard around the outside and soft on the inside, which help give them traction.
They're known for being exceptionally graceful and sure footed.
They have a keen sense of smell and incedible hearing.
They use their horns both as defense from predators, digging and also during mating displays.
Ximos have thick but soft coats which traps warm air close to its body.
They are double coated with guard hairs and a softer undercoat.
Ximos are herbivores and spend most of their time grazing.
Their diet includes grasses, shrubs, herbs, ferns, moss, lichens, twigs, leaves, sedges and cacti.
They can go long periods without water gaining moisture from the food they eat.
They're most active in the mornings and afternoons and rest during the heat of the day in the shade.
Herds
Ximo's live in small herds from 5-12.
Each herd has its own territory of about 20 miles which fluctuates depending on the availability of food.
Females remain in their birth herds for life
Males leave upon maturity and join another herd.
They're highly alert and there is always one or more herd members standing guard.
If the guard hears or smells danger they alert the herd with bleets.
Reproduction
Females usually have a baby every 2 years.
If a baby is orphaned the other females in the herd care for it.
Males don't care for the young but do protect them.
Young nurse until they are about six months.
They become become independent at one year.
They are fully sized and able to reproduce at 2
Relations with Nlians
Ximo wool is one of the main sources of fiber for weaving for the people of the Sky Mountains.
Their wool is famous for its softness and warmth and considered one of the best sources of fiber on Nlia.
Its used for clothes, shawls, coats, blankets and rugs
For thousands of years Nlians have domesticated Ximos for their wool and as beasts of burden.
Only a percentage are domesticated and there are many wild herds.
Ximo that are trained from weaning are very friendly and pleasant to be around.
They are extremely curious and will approach people easily.
