This is a Lohum, an animal native to the planet Nlia
NLIA
Nlia , is a planet that exists in my AU Star Trek ‘New Start’ verse
seekhim.deviantart.com/gallery…
It is the home of the Nlians who are members of the United Federation of Planets
The planet has three landmasses:
The Northern Land: A tiny northern island continent, roughly the size of Turkey.
The Western Land: A large western continent the size of Eurasia
The Eastern Land: A large eastern continent about the size of Asia.
The two southern continents are collectively referred to as the Southern Lands
They are comprised mostly of desert with arid grasslands at the northern coasts and southern tips.
THE VALO HILLS PENINSULA
The Valo Hills Mainland is loated in the north east of the continent.
It is one of the most fertile areas of the continant.
It consists of ruggest hills, arid savannas, scrublands and scattered woods
LOHUMS
Lohums are large four legged mammals indigenous to Peninsula
They mostly occupy the savanna regions but some live on the outer edges of the desert.
Biology
Lohums are herbivores and are both grazers and browsers.
They eat grass, leaves, twigs, fruit, bark and roots.
They' drink daily if given the oppurtunity but are cabable of going for weeks gleaning moisture from the food they eat.
Their pelvis and hindlimbs are specialized enabling them to rear upright, and to sit for hours.
Their primary defence is their toughened hide
If threatened they can drive enemies off with powerful legged kicks
They generally move slowly but can however reach speeds of up to 30 mph
They range in color from tan to light brown.
Behavior
Lohums form groups of up to eight, usually females with young.
Membership is very flexible.
Smaller groups often join together to graze in preferred foraging areas.
Females form strong kinship bonds with their relatives.
Mothers, daughters, and sisters may live together for many years.
Males usually travel alone or in the company of another male
Reproduction
Female Lohums generally reproduce every two years and produce one baby at a time.
Pregnancy is about eight months.
Calves are able to stand and walk within an hour of birth.
Calves nurse for a year and are independent at two.
Males leaves as soon as they become independent.
Females usually stay wih their mothers and help to raise younger siblings.
Lohums reach sexual maturity at five years
Lifespan
Lohums can live up to 40-50 years
Relations with Nlians
For millennia Nlians have domesticated Lohums for their milk, fur and as beasts of burden.
Only a percentage are domesticated and there are many wild ones.
