She was born in the 9th century B.C. in the Western Continent, in the east coast port city of Brava. To be more accurate she was born at sea; her father was captain of a trade ship that  made regular runs across the Trade Sea which separated the Western and Eastern continents.

She was born at sea and it was to the sea that her heart ever lay. She grew up on her father's ship and by the time she took Adult Passage she had forgotten more about ships than most people will ever know.  She became a highly respected sea captain and went on several voyages. She was an avid explorer with an intense interest in both history and geography. One thing that particularly drew her interest was the Storm Sea

Thousands of years before (circa 9000 B.C.) the northern coastal areas of the Western and Eastern Continents had suffered the Cataclysm a series of cataclysmic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Virtually every hill was split apart, filling the air with ash and fire and belching lava. Entire areas near the coast collapsed and fell into the sea, forever altering the shape of the land.

Both regions suffered periodic eruptions and upheavals for 1000 years. The damage was particularly severe in the Western Continent. The land area eventually stabilized and the volcanic eruptions resulted in great fertility of the soil enabling the Valo Hills region to become a major breadbasket for the continent. However for thousands of years the Storm Sea north of it were rendered virtually impossible to sail through, forcing ships in that area to stay close to the coastline.

In Rashel’s time, global wind patterns changed. She believed that it would now be possible to travel across the Storm Sea and eventually put together an expedition of five ships. They set out from the port city of Illefa  in the Valo Hills Peninsula in 800 B.C., traveling due North.

The fleet traveled slowly but surely. They ran into several storms and one ship was lost but they continued on. Eventually they made an incredible discovery- a new land, the Northern Continent. Completely different from the desert lands of the south, it was covered in forests and had more vegetation than any of the crews had seen in their lives.

The quickly made a second incredible discovery- this land was inhabited. Inhabited by pale skinned Nlians. The meeting was cautious but peaceful and both sides learned to communicate, the fact that both were telepathic helped.

When the Cataclysm occurred thousands of years before, there had been several nomadic tribes living in the Valo Hills Peninsula, including small fishing communities by the coast. When the destruction occurred many of the tribes had either perished or fled south. Four villages of fishers from the north eastern coast had fled the destruction in their tiny boats. They had traveled northeast, following the migratory patterns of the White Gliders and had discovered and settled the Northern Land, which they called the Evergreen. They painted the history of their origins and journey in the caves not far from where they landed, which ironically wasn't far from where Rashel's fleet landed.

Descendants of those fishers had, since then, spread out and settled all the different regions of the tiny continent. The inhabitants of the South hadn’t believed that anyone had survived the Cataclysm. And the refugees had believed that everyone other than them had perished in the destruction.

If this encounter had taken place on Earth it would very likely have resulted in violence, tragedy, conquest, slavery or displacement. But even before the Cataclysm, all Nlians had thought of each other as brethren and when the two groups met at last, they saw this as a reunion of long separated brethren.

Valeena’s discovery began The Time of the Three Kindreds when there was regular travel and commerce between all three continents. She went down in history as Storm-challenger and Kinfinder

The area of the Storm Sea between the Western and Northern Continent was renamed the Sundering Sea because for so long it had sundered brethren. The area where both groups came ashore became the site of the city of Soarliss

When I was younger I was fascinated by the voyages of Christopher Columbus.
It wasn't until later that I learned of the impact of his voyages on the Taino.
The Native Americans who inhabited the Caribbean area
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ta%C3%AD…

The entire history oft he Caribbean is pretty tragic. Most of the native population
was wiped by slavery and exposure to European diseases. One of the reasons they
started using African slaves to the Caribbean is because nearly all of the of the Native Americans had died

I guess I wanted to show a discovery of an new land that didn't result in betrayal and enslavement.
I did try to be realistic though and show some problems that resulted from new cultures coming in contact
and how an alien species might have handled it differently from humans

Yeah, Columbus wasn't a great guy before he found the New World, but he really wasn't a bad guy either. The experiences he had in the Americas, the unlimited power, and the desire for wealth at any cost... that changed him from a normal guy, driven by ambition, to a monster willing to kill, rape, and torture to get what he wanted. It was really sad for everyone involved. But especially for the Taino.

On a lighter note this is Memorial Day.
I'm curious did any of you family serve in the armed forces.
My dad served in the Marines during WWII and his dad in the army in WWI

My Mother's Father served in Vietnam in the Army (and later in the Navy and Air Force), and my Step-Father did two tours as a Marine helicopter mechanic/door gunner. My Father joined the Army during Vietnam, but was shipped to Germany because the war was 'winding down'. An Aunt served in the Air Force as a Jet-turbine mechanic. An Uncle served in the Army during the same time as my Father but was never deployed into combat. My best friend in High School served in the Air Force as a Crew Chief on a KC-135 and spent time in the Middle East but never in a combat zone. My current best friend served in the Army but was never deployed into combat during his 4 years. My Favorite Sister's first husband served in the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan and came to rely on illegal substances to self-medicate his PTSD. My Favorite Sister's second husband serves in the Army now.

Each of these people are amazing individuals, flaws and all, and each has had a strong, positive impact on my life.

Each of them has also told me that I'm "not the military type".

You've got a LOT of vets in your family!

I wrote this poem about my dad's parents years ago and it seemed fitting to post in on Memorial Day.
Please let me know what you think of it

Cap and Mattie LeeCap and Mattie Lee.
I never knew you in the flesh.
But I heard about you many times.
I heard about how smart you both were.
How you impacted your children’s lives.
I heard stories about you.
And I wished that I could have met you.
I would look at pictures of you.
See how your children resembled you.
And I would wonder what your voices were like.
Cap and Mattie Lee.
I never knew you in the flesh.
But you were never far from my heart.

I do! We've been spectacularly unsuccessful outside of the military!

It's interesting how Nilan telepathy helped smooth over first contacts between cultures; less chance for misunderstandings, most likely.

Definitely.
If you can touch another's soul you're not going to see them as savages or animals
