Description
THIS WORK IS CALLED:"UNSUCCESSFUL TRANSMOGRIFICATION OF THE HOST".
Okay, are you ready for this?
I have a lot going on in my mind at any one time and so I tend to go on and on. If you have questions feel free to drop me a line. Here is the deal with this image:
It is HP Lovecraft related.
The impetus for this work is in the description of the Mi-Go. Pinkish, and part animal but mostly fungoid in nature with a proclivity for exploration of the functions of other organisms,(specifically brain surgery...how cool is that??) I have again taken some liberty with characters from Lovecraft's Mythos.
In this scene I envisioned an early ancestor of the Mi-Go, a type that combines some form of parasitic attachment and a type of osmosis for the purpose of learning about a host organism and directly incorporating the data. A bit of a "face hugger" meets "the Blob" to give you an analogy.
In this case though, the host --who up until a few moments earlier had been trying to kick back and relax on the couch with dinner after a hard day-- proved unsuitable (probably because of some virus alien to natives to Yuggoth--that's Neptune in our world.) and the process of attachment lead to an incomplete merging of physiologies with fatal results for all organisms involved.
Basically, the transformation could not be complete and so the Mi-Go died as did the host when his face exploded, but not before parts of him had started to become part of the attached Mi-Go.
As with "Subway Accident" the evidence of dimensional shift is present in the distortions.
There. All done reading.
There might be a quiz.
Thanks for viewing!!

Damn. I think I remember not updating that.
Well, Pluto isn't officially a planet anymore so maybe they moved to a new location. The important thing is that there aren't any creatures living on Uranus.

I thought Yuggoth was Pluto.
Ylidiomph is Jupiter.
Cykranosh is Saturn.
L'gy'hx is Uranus.
Yaksh is Neptune.

I have to say, I hadn't heard of that particular Lovecraft creation until now, but the picture is fully explicit in all the ways Lovecraft was known for. The mythos lives on.
Ooooh. And the TV dinner in the corner makes this shot. :3

Hmmm, yeah I have heard it is one and in other places I heard it is another.
Now that POluto is not a "planet" who is to say... maybe that makes it more or less plausible?

Hey, you should asked Dr. Tyson about Yuggoth. You know, since the book he wants to discuss is called The Pluto Files.

but... yuggoth is pluto.
Love the concept, you know in "the whisper in darkness" nyaqrlathotep himself suggests that there are many different forms of Mi-Go, altering the less able versions of themselves is what gave them thier advanced knowledge of surgery in the first place!

Yeah there is some debate as to just which spot HPL intended, whether it was in fact Pluto or just a trans-Neptunian world. Now, they say Pluto is not a planet so I am not sure if that lends or detracts credence from the discussion.
And yep, where there is sentience there will be manipulation and change. Man, it is good to find someone who is as versed in the work of HPL! Thanks for checking it out. Good to meetcha!

This one was actually older from around 2003, and meant more as an illustration... to "modernize" the geist of Lovecraft I think.
Catching the spirit and running with it the way Sid Sime or AO Spare might have done so many many years ago.

I'd say any of the more supernatural related works that approach illustration are motivated by a similar process.

Wow, this is an incredible composition. Like someone else mentioned, the textures are amazing; there's a great variety, and they're all so realistic and convincing. I especially like the textures of the jeans and the couch. I also really like how you pulled some of the yellow from couch into the blood splatter; it's very nicely balanced.
I think one of the greatest things about this piece is the angle at which the figure was drawn. The diagonal lines of the couch are very compositionally successful, and I love how it really looks like the figure is on the couch, not just floating there. I also think it's very intriguing how the couch, food, and floor look very "normal," but the cloudy background helps add to the dream-like quality of the piece. Oh, and speaking of the food, that was a really great touch.
Anyway, this painting just rocks. It has an awesome composition and very captivating subject, and you did a great job with the craftsmanship.

Thanks Ash, this is one of those pro-commercial works where I left nothing to chance and used all the tools available, it is also one of those that took several variations and hours upon hours to get "right". WIth the Lovecraft related work, I wanted a heightened degree of realism to push the plausibility of the typical aspects of the scene into balance with what I knew I would be introducing as bizarre elements of the... for lack of a better word, supernatural. "The Lesson" is another like that, where the scene should read as near photographic to reference the idea that it COULD be directly from life, but is also probably just an illustration for a horror magazie, for example.
I appreciate you taking the time to check it out, nice to see ya!

This was sort of a personal interpretive spin off of the Mi-Go (The Whisperer In Darkness) .
In this case, not a direct interpretation but more of an ancestral link, something Mi-Go like.
The story has been taken offline but I think I have it backed up someplace.
I can send it to ya.
" Mi-Go . Creatures of superior intelligence from beyond the borders of our galaxy who mine certain areas on earth for minerals not available on their home planet. At the present time, these mining colonies are known to exist in the Andes, the Appalachians, and the Himalayas. The Mi-Go are more vegetable than animal, having a somewhat fungoid composition. It is this composition which prevents them from being photographed by ordinary camera equipment. Various descriptions abound from different parts of the earth, though all are central in composition. The Mi-Go are pinkish in color about five feet long, with crustaceous bodies bearing vast pairs of dorsal fins or membranous wings and several sets of articulate limbs. The Mi-Go have a sort of convoluted ellipsoid where its head should be, covered with a multitude of very short antennae. The Mi-Go genus is unique in its ability to traverse the heatless and airless interstellar void in its corporeal form, though some of its variants do require mechanical or curious surgical transpositions to do so. The Vermont variety have organic wings which allow them free flight in space, though flight in our atmosphere is rather clumsy. Telepathy is their main means of communications. With surgical alterations of the vocal chords the Mi-Go are able to speak human languages, though their voice is buzzy and irritating. The Mi-Go are advanced in the sphere of surgery and can successfully remove the brain of other species into silver cylinders for transportation to other worlds through space. The Mi-Go are physical beings and therefore killable, bleeding a strange, green ichor as blood. Dogs especially hate Mi-Go and will attack viciously

had not seen this before, and I thought I went through all your works...hmmm...
This one would almost get a just because it is lovecraftian work, however, I dont do those things, so here is why it is faved:
I LOVE the textuire on the couch, the t-shirt and the pants seem almost as taken from a photography, at the same time, there is an uncanny horror-sensation just dripping around this image. Also, the face of the guy seems familiar... Munch inspired?

There is a classic painting vibe here I am sure, and I have heard references to Bacon, but this was not really the intent.
I don't think there was any one artist who served as the visual inspiration, but I know that reading about Eakins and his paintings causing growing men to faint ( Gorss Clinic, 1875) had a psychological impact. I also wanted to work to be near photographic to heighten the visceral quality, but without actually being photos. For commercial work I will use references, but everything is still manually done, which is tedious but pays off.

That is correct. I just updated the image with a cleaner version (the content is the same) and did not realize there would be a notification sent out as with new deviations.
But yeah it is an old one designed specifically for illustration purposes (less emotive "arte fina" and more commercial BAM! )
from the HP Lovecraft inspired series.
