Description So, I watched The Secret of Kells today. I had been interested since its nomination for the Academy Award for best animated picture (up against Pixar's Up). The film was quite beautiful to look at, a real back to classic 2D, with watercolor backgrounds I have yet to see the equal in a full-length feature. Voice casting was spot on for the most part. While children will not doubt enjoy it, I think they will be too caught up in the friendship between Brendan (a young monk) and Aisling (a quirky fairy/wolf creature) and the raiding --and pretty damn scary-- vikings and will largely miss out on the films' real humanity. The relationship between Brendan and his uncle, a stern abbott with control issues, evolves quite naturally. Father Aidan is a wonderful coot and foil.

So, the cat! Every kids' film needs a furry sidekick-- so here's Pangur Bán. I was really hoping when I first saw her that she would be a supernatural, but other than her surprising longevity (she's still as spry as ever at the end of the timeskip), she seemed like a normal critter by and by. Two colored eyes (Pangur Bán has one green and one blue) is often a mark of the Fey (fairy folk) in Celtic folklore, so that's where I got the idea. Still, cute!

Isn't it Pangur Bán? Or is that just the poem...

They won't let you use additional 'symbols' in the title. And I'm lazy.

This is seriously amazing. My sister loves Pangur Ban so much she changed her facebook cover and profile pic.

I like the goat herd dude though. xD All he says is "Baa!"

Wonderful job on this, I share your view on the film 100% and I love Pangur's ghost form you drew in the back! Pangur is, however, a male (:

I just saw The Secret of Kells recently too. I liked it MUCH more than I expected; I haven't seen animation that beautiful since the Thief and the Cobbler. But unlike that film, as you've said, this one has a lot of heart and humanity. It's the relationships between the characters (Brendan, the Abbot, Adain, Pangur Ban, Aisling, Crom Cruach and the Vikings) that drive the plot forward, and makes it so heartwarming.

Anyway, yours is one of the best versions of Pangur Ban I've seen. She was so pretty and funny, you've captured her beauty and personality so wonderfully, both as cat and fog. This is going on the favourite's list. ^^

Thanks so much for the comment! TSoK made me want to pick up watercolors again. The style was just inspiring for the backgrounds. Just breathtaking!

Fantastic depiction of one of my favorite characters in this fascinating movie. I think my favorite character was Aisling.

I thought she might be a fairy creature, too. Maybe she is descended from supernatural beings?

Hah, I was just looking for Pangur Ban images on Google and this came up on like the first page! How awesome! I thought this might've been an unused cel from the movie or something ^.^

Hope you're well!

A cat that understands people and is unafraid of a wolf-spirit isnt supernatural enough for your theory of the eyes? For the Irish it is!

Putting supernatural aside, I think Pangur was a Turkish Angora breed, they very often have one green, one blue eye. Not sure if Angoras were common in Ireland at all but still.

This is such a beautiful depiction! I love it. The scene where Aisling turns Pangur Ban into a mist creature is probably my favorite, so I love that you added it in her shadow here.

I loved the movie too! The detail of the work is incredible! I think that it had elements for children as you say, but yet told a story that adults could also enjoy (especially for their inner child!). While it could have embellished, it still kept many aspect grounded in reality.

Anyway, I really liked this piece as it's the first to show up in my messages! I also liked Ashling's song (somewhat illustrated in this picture).

Could I ask a favor of you and ask that you consider making this a simple wallpaper?
